The second Roomba i purchased had new styling, very similar to the new 614 model. It was smarter and would return to its dock most of the time when it was finished cleaning. It did seem to get stuck under the same pieces of furniture once in a while which was annoying but overall I was very happy with that unit and it still works today after 3 years or so.
This Roomba 614 is the brand new 2016 model entry level vacuuming robot that looks almost identical to the older model, but it is more intelligent. It doesn't get stuck under my furniture anymore. It seems to be smarter where it goes, and it always is able to return to its dock. I am not sure what they did, but it's somehow smarter and it's noticeable. The filter and dust collection bin has also been redesigned and it works great, although I didn't have a problem with the older one either. One other improvement I've noticed is the smooth transition from wood floors to carpet or rugs. It seems to have less of a problem going over my rugs, when sometimes the older model would treat thicker rugs like a wall and go around them. I'm sure the sensors combined with newer software just makes it seem "smarter", even on this entry level model which is great.
I don't use the Roomba exclusively in my house, but I do use it almost daily on my hardwood floors and rugs. It makes regular vacuuming much faster and easier, and I only use my big vacuum about once a month now. You can probably get away with never using another vacuum, but I am picky about how clean my house is. I've always been impressed with these little vacuum robots. This newest version is the best one I've ever used, and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't like to vacuum. As long as you have a hard or carpet floor without a lot of junk on it, the Roomba can do its job and you will always come home to a vacuumed house. If you have pets that shed a lot, you may want to consider a higher model to really get all the hair, and so the dust bin doesn't fill up too fast. One last note: my cat is scared of all Roombas, and runs away from it. I have tried for years to get her to ride around on it but it's not going to happen. Your results may vary.
I ordered the Roomba 614 and got it yesterday. All I can say is that I'm very impressed by what it has done so far! I have 2 large dogs and they leave fur everywhere. My significant other and I both have children and work and finding the time to keep up with sweeping and mopping the floors can be a challenge sometimes. I have wooden floors (I have heard horror stories of Roomba scratching wooden floors, but have not experienced a problem yet), and carpet in the bedrooms and it has performed great on all surfaces and picked up more dirt and hair than I knew existed in my house. My wooden floors are light in color and I have tan carpet, I'm just stating that because it seems Roomba has problems with certain color floors.
It's not perfect though, so don't get too excited, it has a lot of flaws but is still well worth a purchase. You need to make sure you have nothing on your floors than can get sucked up. If you have kids than leave a shirt laying on the ground or a sock just like a regular vacuum you will have problems with it getting stuck and sucking them up.
If you have a lot of tables and couches it can get easily get confused and bounce back and forth in the room doing endless passes for no reason. It does usually find it's way out in most cases, but it definitely is not "smart".
I went with the 614 over the more expensive model. A lot of people seem to think the scheduling is the most important feature of these robots, but I don't see the point and would just save my money. I can certainly see how it may be nice to totally forget about it and let it clean, but it's really not that hard to go over to your Roomba and press the button before you leave for work. There isn't really a need for scheduling unless you're abnormally busy or you have $50 burning a hole in your pocket.
Overall, this is a great product for $250 and I definitely think I'll get more than my money's worth out of it.
With great anticipation I brought this Roomba home with me. I allowed it to charge all day at work so I could fire it up as soon as possible. As I struck the CLEAN button I was immediately giddy as the little robot happily beeped its acquiescence and began its duties.
I live in a 2 bedroom apartment. Unaware of what to expect, the Roomba began zig zagging and bumping into walls. Seemingly at random, I soon learned there was a method to its madness. One pleasant surprise was the Roomba's aggression - on two occasions it burst into rooms with slightly closed doors. It ably navigated around obstacles in its quest for more dirt and dust to add to its collection. I was shocked as it went underneath my bed (to the extent that it could, physically).
It then moved into the kitchen, where the little wirey brush moved popcorn bits and other detritus into the vacuum. It was able to navigate over carpet and hardwood effortlessly. It moved under chairs and rotated around the legs, doing a nice job of covering as much ground as possible.
By the end of it's mission, it was at capacity - I was shocked at how much dirt it had collected.
The only downside is that it wasn't able to cover EVERY inch of ground, though I'm sure it came close. Running the unit daily I'm sure will get to every corner and crevice. Also, you must clean up prior to using it or it won't get around all your crap. Honestly the thing is damn heartwarming - it works hard and it's happy bumps into walls made me reevaluate my own existence... everyone should do their job with the enthusiasm of my Roomba.
