I was primarily looking for a slim spatula to use with my Vitamix. I really wanted to get to the bottom of which spatula is the best... the Vitamix Spatula, Set of 3, the OXO Good Grips Jar Spatula, White or this ISI Basics Slim Spatula. I've read all the reviews for each and a lot of people seemed to like the Vitamix spatula. So I bought all three.
Up front, the Vitamix spatula was absolutely the least quality and worse performing spatula of the bunch. It's hard plastic, not pliable and did a terrible job at conforming to the sides of the Vitamix when scraping material out of it. Plus, the hard plastic is easily nicked by the Vitamix blades. So I regretted buying the Vitamix spatulas.
This ISI Basics spatula is great. It's 10 3/4" long in total length which is long enough to reach to the bottom of the Vitamix. It has a spring steel core covered with silicone. That means it is BPA free, dishwasher safe and stiff. It does not easily bend as you are trying to scrape something out of the Vitamix, yet the edges of the spatula do give a little bit. The soft silicone edges of the spatula excel at scraping material off the inside of the Vitamix. And the edges of the spatula are thin which makes this useful for other things than just using in the Vitamix. The spatula actually has edges of different lengths. One side is 3 7/8" long while the other side is shorter, at 2 7/8".
Whereas the Vitamix is easily nicked by the blades of the Vitamix, I believe the softer silicone is more resilient. You still have to be careful around the blades, but compared to the Vitamix which is so easily nicked, this is not as easily nicked.
Of course, this spatula is also great for scraping every last little bit of peanut butter out of a jar, or mayonnaise, etc. It's also thin enough to use in around the edges of a baking pan. And because it is silicone, it can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees.
This is great for using with the Vitamix. The OXO Jar Spatula is also good. I'd say it's a toss-up. I bought both and use them both. You can't go wrong with either one.
Well, we've owned it (blue one) for less than a year (maybe 6-9 mos?) and the other day, while it was drying in the rack (he uses it too often to always wait for a full load, so he rarely puts it in the dishwasher), I noticed it had developed a small (.25") hairline crack in the top of the flex part. Maybe it's just a hair too stiff? Maybe he's a hair to strong? I dunno, but I know that crack can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Even though we are generally a no-sugar, vegan household, bacteria could still grow. I replaced the original blue one with another of exactly the same (but in green, so we could tell the difference), because it's the best one I've found to fit his needs: stiff enough to scrape out natural peanut butter from the bottom of a jar, and slim enough to fit in the jar.
I like that:
- it's really narrow, so it fits inside jars like those little tomato paste jars.
- it is made with silicone, seems to not hold on to odors, grease, or staining.
- it is one-piece and won't harbor bacteria where a joint might be on other models.
- it reduces waste.
- it has a hole in the handle, if you want to hang it.
- the ridges are "gradual", so food doesn't "collect" along them.
- it is easy to grip, especially, when scraping thick stuff (or, ice cream that's frozen to the side of the ice cream maker).
- now, there aren't 5 almost-empty jars of peanut butter sitting on my counter, waiting to be washed out.
- it can be used for food as well as massage cream, the bottom of a wide-mouth bottle of body lotion or hair conditioner, or even as a tool to scrape off icky stuff (buying a different one for each job is recommended, of course!).
We like it so much, it deserves 5 stars, but I think it should have lasted at least a full year (or more!), so I docked a star.
*NOTE: my beau really enjoyed the replacement green/wasabi one I bought for him, as well. Used it every day. That is, until he took a chunk out of it, by scraping the mixing/blade part of our CuisineArt Stick Blender (which he loves). He accidentally triggered the "on" button while the spatula was near the blade. It still kinda works, so we'll keep it in the garage (with the cracked blue one) but, for food, a new one was in order. I immediately bought him a few more, on his request. He wanted to ensure he didn't go a day in the kitchen without one, should another mishap occur. He's such a good cook that I happily complied!
FYI: I have seen the price range from five dollars to eleven dollars, mostly depending on the color, and they are often part of the four-for-three promotion that Amazon has (yay!).

It was so simple to use and nearly wiped it clean, so much easier than a regular spatula. I am very impressed.
A once frustrating task is now so easy.
