The scraper features a wide curved edge to scrape bowls clean, a flat edge for getting sticky dough from cutting boards and counter tops and a notch designed to srape batters and doughs from your stirring spoons. Made of silicone this piece is heat resistant to 600 degrees and can be used to scrape up bits in a hot pan as well. A great addition to your kitchen.
Top customer reviews
I just upgraded my review from 2 to 3 stars (would give it 3-1/2 if I could). Having tried other scrapers hoping they would replace this one, I simply haven't found any that are nearly as useful from a shape and design perspective. It strikes the perfect balance between flexibility and sturdiness (apart from the splitting issue). I will give the iSi another try and will just be more careful with it (i.e., will use just sponges to wash, vs. the natural bristle brush I'd used with my prior iSi spatulas, and will scrape more *gently*).
Also, I contacted iSi after my third iSi product failed with the same splitting issue, and they sent me replacements right away (though they didn't answer my inquiry re: why this was happening and whether there were any fixes, either by the user or in their design). So, with the belief that part of a product's value lies in the service attached to it, I did want to ensure my rating and review reflected the decent and responsive service.
I know this is a lot of information, especially for just a scraper! But while not spendy, spatulas and scrapers are a daily necessity for me and I'm assuming for others, and so worth the bother to ensure that one gets an efficient, reliable, and durable one that doesn't need to be replaced every few uses
NOTE: This review is technically for the blue version of this scraper, which is listed separately. I also own this white version, but the blue one is no longer being sold on Amazon (as of the date of this review) so I thought I'd put my review here. I'm assuming that apart from color, the two scrapers are the same.
I own three of these scrapers, one in blue and two in white, and I was just about to write an enthusiastic review for them when my blue one split at the edge (see photos below). The scraper had been used just four or five times, to scrape dough out of a silicone or glass bowl and in one instance, to scrape sauce out of a cold pot. That's it.
I've only put the scraper in the dishwasher a few times, and always on the top rack.
I'm not sure how the silicone could have split after such limited, standard use. But the exact same thing happened with the two iSi Basics Silicone Slim Spatula, Red I also purchased from Amazon - I've attached a photo of those as well. In contrast, all my Trudeau silicone spatulas, of which I own four, have held up perfectly fine, even after using them for cooking, which they're well suited for (in every other respect, I've actually prefered the iSis over the Trudeaus, for the iSis' slender, compact shape and more vibrant colors). I suspect iSi uses the same or similar silicone for both the scraper and the slender spatula, and the silicone or production is somehow flawed.
It's too bad, as the scraper is nearly perfect in every other respect. It works spectacularly in silicone mixing bowls - gets every last bit of dough out. And it works respectably in standard glass mixing bowls and cooking pans. For most uses, I actually preferred it to the highly regarded Matfer Bourgeat Nylon Dough Scraper. The iSi scraper feels robust in hand, and the colors are exceptionally vibrant as noted earlier.
But until iSi figures out the silicone splitting issue, I'm going to stick with my Mafters and Trudeaus. I don't want to risk any of that silicone falling into my food.
EDIT: I just realized that in addition to the visible splits in the photos, there are a number of micro-splits along the silicone edge that can only be seen when you actually bend the silicone and inspect it closely. These micro-splits will clearly get worse pretty quickly.
I love the Cook's Illustrated reviews and am grateful that they pointed me to this very handy kitchen tool. I use it primarily for two kitchen tasks. First, it is great to scrape any kind of dough (stiff or sticky too) from the mixing bowl, especially that last swipe...this nearly gets the bowl clean! And second, I LOVE to use it to easily transfer whatever I have been chopping from the cutting board to the cooking pot or bowl. It makes this task so much easier! I ordered a second one to have while the first is in the dishwasher because I use it almost every time I cook. Great for bowl scraping and food transferring! Has held up perfectly over at least a year.
After a few months I found that this item is great for cutting soft or gooey baked goods inside non stick pans. since i can not use regular knives or metal object to cut, i used this scraper one day and boy was i glad because it cuts real well and won't damage your non stick a bit.
i also have an OXO small spatula coated in silicone (it's a cookie turner) that i use to lift the cut pieces out of the pans.
try it and you will love the result.
