exploding coffee

The product arrived in the morning, later during the same day I opened it to make an espresso. When I pulled the lid tab, the coffee exploded from the can. There was coffee powder everywhere and it scared everyone in the room. Beware!

What a disappointment. After exclusively using the other Italian brand that starts with an L Creme é Gusto for the last 2 and 1/2 years to make lattes, I decided to try Illy for the first time being that the bar was set higher in all of the raving reviews.

The Espresso grinds are a finer powder almost the equivalent of Turkish coffee, so by volume is much fluffier when you put it in the porter filter. Typically a 1 oz/30ml scoop in volume equates to 8g of espresso grinds. With the Illy, Using the same cup I only get 6g of espresso grinds. If I put my typical measure of 14 -15g in my portal filter for a double shot latte and tamp them using a spring loaded temp to 32psi, the grinds are so tightly packed that it will not allow the steam to penetrate using my Mr Coffee Cafe Barista espresso machine. If I include grinds by volume and stop at two level measured cups which is 12g of espresso grinds then my latte is very weak. For a dark roast It just doesn't have anything to compare with the L brand Cremé é Gusto. There were no chocolatey notes, very little crema comparatively. I would add that there was no bitterness, there just really wasn't much of anything other than brown water, hopefully it had some caffeine but I didn't feel the kick like I normally do.

Thinking I may have got a bad can, though this one seem to be pressurized when I open it I ordered another can and to no surprise it was the same blah experience. Ymmv, $25 down the drain, or in the trash can.

So Illy has changed its dark roast espresso ground coffee. When it was in the black band can and just said "Ground Espresso Coffee" instead of Intenso, it was better coffee. I thought at first they were just rebranding but the quality of their product deteriorated. Not happy, I miss their old dark roast espresso.

It's true what they say. Pregrounds start losing their taste after two weeks, which is what I bought. When I first opened the can, I didn't expect it to "explode". It's not as bad as it sounds. Okay, maybe it is. There was a sudden outrush of air from the canister as the nitrogen or whatever they used to preserved the grounds rushed out, like someone taking an air compressor, turning it up to 30 PSI, and spraying you with air. Yes, it felt that violent.

That being said, I enjoyed the heck out of these pregrounds for the first two weeks in my moka maker. I would make two or even three cups a day. I did notice after two weeks that the coffee started losing its flavor. So, if you are into espressos and use a moka pot, then I would really recommend getting a coffee grinder. I've since given up on moka espressos as I discovered the V60 pour-over method.

Still, I recommend these beans over Starbucks. They just taste a whole lot better. There's nothing like a delicious, hot cup of coffee in the mornings, in the afternoons, or in the evenings, when it's 55 F outside, and you just want to curl up on the couch with a hot cup of joe and watch your favorite shows or work on your favorite things.

I used to visit a local Italian coffee house every weekend when I lived in the North Beach neighborhood in San Francisco. They served Cafe Illy's. So, these beans also bring out the nostalgia of a cold San Francisco evening, enjoying a cup of coffee, post-dinner with my family.

Wow talk about some good luck. Thank god my wife was injured and only some shot up her nose and minor amount in the eyes because she had her glasses on. Wife went to pull the seal and it exploded everywhere. And when I say everywhere I mean that. Shot up her nose and into her eyes. About 1/4 to 1/2 the can of expresso was lost on her and all over the kitchen. I heard it blow 4 rooms away.

I only ordered this due to the fact that I couldn't use my EBT card on Starbucks espresso (don't know why) I only use Starbucks but I found this and when I received it,one day after ordering, I didn't know that it was under so much pressure and I jerked the pull tab off and it exploded up my nose. Smelled great. I was going to throw away what was left but I decided to try it and I never thought I would say this, but it's better than Starbucks espresso! Found out the hard way that you open the can SLOWLY! I mix it with my Starbucks CafeVerona. I will continue to buy Illy and I'm about to browse their site to see what else they have. If you're particular about your coffee like I have been for 50 years, and hardcore Starbucks ONLY drinker, you've got to give Illy espresso a shot! You'll be as surprised as me, just remember: After unscrewing outer lid, OPEN PULL TAB SLOWLY!

My husband prefers bold roasts and this is definitely his favorite. It’s pricey but after trying several different espressos I have to say this one “packs” the best and has the best flavor. We’ve tried all of the popular brands and nothing really even compares. I told my husband that’s because it’s made in Italy and Italians do everything better, haha.. (I’m part Italian lol) But seriously, Italy is the birthplace of espresso so it’s no surprise that this product is so good. We’d absolutely recommend it.

The packaging is very good. There are instructions on the lid how to open it. If you follow the instructions I can assure you there will be no explosion or any mess. For me the taste is not bad. The grounds are fine and good for an espresso machine.
