This was my first time using Zagg Invisible Shield. Having read the reviews, installation was definitely nerve-racking as there is no second chance if you stuff up. I also have 2 cats so I had less than the ideal lint-free, dust-free and hair-free environment to work in.

Thankfully I have had some experience installing signage vinyls at work with wet application, so I had a rough idea what to do though it was still rather scary to do a on a laptop. The experience certainly helped and I managed to install the film quite successfully for a first-timer with only very few minor imperfections. Let's say it wasn't perfect but I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

So this is what I did, but please note do it at your own risk, I'm no pro at this and I'm only writing what I did.

Preparation:

I had a lint-free microfiber cloth ready. This came with a cleaning kit for my monitor and other screen gadgets. I also had an ordinary dinner place mat to soak any excess dribbles. You could probably use something better but that was all I had around. Washed my hands thoroughly and air dry them (not with a towel).

I chose the underside first, just in case I stuff up it's the least visible side. Turn the laptop upside down, give it a good clean with the microfiber cloth and a generic cleaning solution, and make sure the surface is absolutely clean and free of debris. Spray the solution that came with the package onto the fingertips and thumbs, and make sure they are wet and slippery.

Application:

Put the film on the place mat with the backing paper side up. Then carefully peel the backing paper off, stopping at only about 1-2 inches.

The top and bottom cover pieces are reasonably easy - On the newer Macbook Airs, the corners are much shallower so the cover wraps around them nicely (pretty sure the 'bad corner protection' review was for a 1st gen or regular Macbook). The material is somewhat stretchable, so it takes quite a bit of fiddling to get it square the whole way around - It's pretty easy to end up with one end looking great and the other being off-kilter. The top cover is one solid piece, but the bottom cover has holes for the feet and screws, so it's a bit more finicky. Once on though, the stuff seems to be fine.

The real miserable part though is the keyboard cover for the 2010-2011 MBA. It's "U" shaped and runs up both sides of the keyboard as well as completely around the trackpad - this makes for a really flimsy and unwieldy piece of vinyl. Adding to that is that the stuff sticks to itself REALLY WELL. In order to get the pieces to slide around nicely, you have to get things pretty wet - I'm not comfortable getting that much moisture around the keyboard and trackpad opening of my expensive toy, so I tried with a dry install. In the end, the keyboard covering ended up being a big wad of useless plastic. I'm not convinced I want that kind of rubbery texture on the palm-pads anyway, so I wrote it off as no big loss. I didn't even try with the trackpad piece as I really don't want the rubbery feel on the trackpad.

Zagg has an excellent lifetime warranty that does not cover botched installations. I would have been much happier if they'd just left the middle piece out altogether and charged less.

I have installed skins on my ipad and both iphones and did so with good results, so i have a fair amount of experience installing them. This one was not easy, perhaps due to the larger size. The first part I did was the back of the monitor, I followed the instructions by spraying some of the solution on my fingers and on the film as I pulled it off but it is so big that as it comes off, it sticks to itself. Unsticking it stretches the shield which makes covering the laptop more difficult. I got through it ok w/ some small bubbles here and there, but it was not easy. Use care when installing the skin around the keyboard and have a good static/dust free cloth to dry as you squeeze the fluid out. Now that it is dry, i like the skin a lot, it has a better grip and isn't as cold as the bare aluminum.

Quick review:

Super tacky feel (not at all slippery like the the computer is without any case)
Difficult to apply
Fits well (2013 MacBook Air, with the 'Haswell' Processor)
Skip applying the trackpad protector
Still need a sleeve or dedicated carrying pouch (impact protection)

Long Review:

I bought this protector for the MacBook Air that I purchased in July of 2013 (the new 13" with the Intel 'Haswell' processor). I knew that the form factor was exactly the same between the previous generation MBA (MacBook Air) and the new MBA, the only difference being the second microphone on the side, which this cover doesn't cover anyway.

The application was very difficult and time consuming... it took me about 2 hours from start to finish. That being said, I was going for absolute perfection so every cutout had to be exactly in the right place, symmetrical and perfect around all the edges.

The biggest trick is to drench the computer and the film (the invisible shield) AND your hands with the application solution. Literally drench them... I used all of the solution that came with this kit. It was to the point where I was squeegeeing the extra solution out from under the film and it was coming out in gobs. The reason for this is that the more solution you use, the easier it is to 'float' the film into place before it starts tacking down the the computer. Anyone who has done automotive decal work knows this, as it is literally the same process. This solution will NOT harm the computer AS LONG AS YOU KEEP IT TURNED OFF UNTIL IT IS TOTALLY DRIED OUT (hence the long wait time until you're supposed to turn the computer on the first time after you put the protector on).
