that are completely different in terms of topography, ehthnicity, customs and history. Uyless Black, in his
new book, The Light Side of Little Texas introduces us to the oil and ranching country of Southeastern New
Mexico that lies on the border with West Texas.
Black takes us back to his home in Lovington,NM, in the 40's and 50's as he works his way from semi-toddler through his late teens, which as you'll see was a relatively trouble free voyage with healthy doses of warmth with a touch of angst. One thing that bears mentioning is that in this part of the country there has been and there still is a border war, not the one currently making headlines, but between New Mexicans and Texans. UD (I've always had a tough time with Uyless)explains and defends the conflict as only a true New Mexican can.
The book is funny and at the same time poignant. The cast of characters so real that you're sure you've known someone like them, just without the boots and Stetsons.
I dare you to read "The Confessions of a Southern Baptist" without not only a smile but laughing out loud. "Little
Texas Music" is so real I could taste the cold Coors, hear the band and see the bright lights.
While I grew up in the sophistication and urbanity that is Albuquerque, UD's insight, sense of humor and his unique sense of story has me polishing my boots and dusting off my hat for a road trip down South.
I fully expect on my next trip to Little Texas to see that the citizens of Lovington have added Uyless Black's name to Brian Urlacher's on their welcoming sign on the city limits.
It is a book I will remember with a smile. I won't forget the Author's name. Can you imagine having brothers with common names like Tom, Harry, and I can't remember; but I do remember Uyless.
Buy it, read it, and you won't be disappointed!
