wd tv live vs roku xs any opinions out there on which is the most versatile unit to buy. which gives the most bang for the buck?

Roku has many more channel options. Download the Plex Media server on your computer. Add Plex Media to your Roku channels and you can watch anything from your computer. Get the Roku app if you have and Android and play most media from your phone.

The Roku also doesn't have an SPDIF output for audio, bad for those of us with older receivers. It does, however, have Amazon Video-on-Demand, which the WDTV doesn't have (as far as I can tell, anyway).
