"It's like the same...but different..."

First off, I didn't get the same item as pictured. I was using this to upgrade my iPod Video 5th Gen to accommodate the Biwin® 128GB 50mm SATA III 6Gb/s mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD MLC Flash. Everything went fine until it came time to eject and unplug after syncing. I got the dreaded sad iPod with the exclamation point and a very low battery warning shortly afterwards. This was impossible because the battery was fully charged (and brand new). I disassembled my iPod, tugged on the adapter, then lo and behold the ribbon cable came right off. And that was after it was supposedly secured. The problem, I think, lies with the method that the adapter I got uses to secure the ribbon cable. Instead of using what the original iPod hard drive had (a latch mechanism) the adapter I got had a mechanism similar to what secures the ribbon cable for the battery (compression). The picture shows a latching mechanism. I'm returning this and ordering one from a different manufacturer (one can hope anyway...China).

The unit failed to work with Crucial M550 256GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT256M550SSD3 installed in it. There was no detection of the drive at all. The experiments were:

1) did not work in the Sony VAIO VGN-UX280P 4.5-inch Laptop (Intel Core Solo Processor U1400, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive) to replace a Generic US 1.8" TOSHIBA 100GB MK1011GAH for DELL D420 D430 &KOHJINSHA Kjs SR SX3 SC3.

2) It also failed in 1.8-inch ZIF LIF (iPod) Hard Drive Enclosure Case for Toshiba Hitachi Seagate Samsung Drives with ZIF-40 Connector (Color Assorted) as well.

The Crucial M550 256GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT256M550SSD3 worked perfectly in Sabrent USB 3.0 mSATA II or III/6G SSD Enclosure Adapter [Support UASP] (EC-UKMS) but not in Micro SATA Cables - mSATA SSD to 40 Pin ZIF Adapter Card as Toshiba or Hitachi ZIF HDD.

I returned the unit and have requested for a replacement. I will redo the review if the second one works...

[Update 20150207] Ordered an identical unit while the first one was in return transit and once the new one showed up it worked like clockwork. Can not complain anything about this unit anymore, the QC of these units leaving the manufacturer or the seller should improve but if working this unit is pretty painless and effective. 4/5 simply due to QC issues.

I recently bought a Dell Latitude D430 laptop which was equipped with a 80GB 1.8 inch ZIF hard drive from Toshiba. The drive had a spindle speed of 4200 RPM and was the biggest performance bottleneck in the system. Linux Mint 17.3 64-bit took a pretty long time to boot and get me to a usable system state after logon. Applications like FireFox and LibreOffice were a bit sluggish to load. I paired this mSATA to ZIF adapter with a 120GB MyDigitalSSD BP4 V2, loaded a fresh copy of Mint and I'm pleased with the results. The old D430 now takes about 1/3rd of the time it did before to boot up and programs are a lot quicker to load as well. The installation was fairly problem free though I do admit that the adapter isn't an exact fit for the 80GB hard drive it replaced, meaning the rubber drive jacket won't hold the SSD in place as well as it did the OEM-supplied drive. It hasn't been a problem for the few days I've had the computer running as the battery also offers some physical support for the mSATA drive and adapter assembly, but it is a minor concern. I consider it a worthwhile trade-off over buying a 1.8 inch ZIF SSD since I can later transplant the mSATA SSD into a more modern system, but an actual ZIF SSD is a technological dead end that won't work in a newer computer. Note that you'll have to be careful about what direction you attach the D430's ribbon cable. The ZIF adapter has to go in upside down versus the orientation of the hard drive. After install, if you see a solid green hard drive light and the D430 doesn't recognize the drive, that's your tip off that you need to flip the ZIF card over so the cable goes in the other way. It won't damage a D430 to do it wrong, but it is nice to get it right on the first attempt.

Product sold is not as pictured. Wrote to vendor and vendor stated that what I received was all he/she had.

I suggested that vendor change picture. The picture of the different mSATA SSD to 40 PIN ZIF is still posted.

That said I used a 15cm 40 pin ZIF cable to test it. One side was white (thin) and the other side was blue (thick).

Tested with a 1/2 sized mSATA card. Picture depicts a hole for the 1/2 sized mSATA card. What I received did not have this hole.

I then used an extension to the 1/2 mSATA card and attached it. The mSATA card was seen fine and I was able to format it.

I am returning it as I couldn't use it as sold because the picture depicted a hole on the board for a 1/2 sized mSATA card such that was is shown here is not was is sold and sent to purchaser.

Pictures show same as posted here and what I received from vendor.

Part number of shipped product is shown in picture.

Got the adapter to install the Crucial m4 256GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT256M4SSD3 card in my iPod, tried to format it before installing the card in the iPod but failed to format so I just installed in the iPod with the contacts facing up and connected it to iTunes and voila! iTunes recognized the iPod and asked it to be restored.

This worked great, the iPod is lighter and I have 238gb of storage available. It's a shame it didn't worked with the iPod Classic 7th generation.

Be aware that this adapter does not have the metal plates on both sides of the ZIF connector, and because of this I could not use it in an iPod classic 5.5g.Read more
