The Micro SATA Cables, 1.8" drive sled adapter worked and since removed, now relegated for only testing or backup purposes, with a Samsung 840EVO, 500GB SSD and Lenovo X301 laptop.
i) The Micro SATA Cables drive sled adapter (nicely packaged in an ESD bag), and perhaps originally intended for some proprietary product but still functional, is not built to the necessary width and height specifications for the device to dovetail fit a standard 1.8" drive bay slot.
The Micro SATA Cables drive sled adapter floating some left to right, between the provided dovetail rails in a standard 5 mm tall, 1.8" drive bay such as that found in a typical laptop, the drive sled adapter being about 4mm too narrow in width. The non use of the dovetail rails by the Micro SATA product not occurring with the expensive Aleratec, mSATA SSD to 1.8" SATA Drive Converter with Frame, the Aleratec device making use of the rails in a 1.8" drive bay slot.
ii) The original OEM 1.8" Samsung 120GB SSD drive that the Micro SATA Cables drive sled adapter was to replace, being about 3mm thick and position height centered in the laptop's 1.8" drive bay slot. This height centered placement of the OEM SSD, permitting for some thermal isolation and air to convect about the SSD. The metal encased OEM SSD, being purposefully designed with about 1mm clearance at the top and bottom of the 1.8" drive bay slot.
The drive sled adapter by Micro SATA Cables, with 50mm, 500GB Samsung 840EVO SSD attached, not permitting for similar thermal isolation and convection to take place about the drive. The collective height of the full, two piece assembly being about 4mm in average thickness (front to back and left to right).
Because the Micro SATA Cables drive sled adapter is nearly flush fit with the underside of the laptop's 1.8" drive bay slot and mounted SSD on the underside, with less thermal isolation transferring more heat from the attached SSD to the laptop case. The keys on the laptop and case edge getting warm to the touch. A condition that was not present prior to the use of the Micro SATA Cables drive sled adapter or with an Aleratec 1.8" drive sled adapter.
The Aleratec adapter with Samsung 840EVO SSD mounted and for the most part, being of similar total thickness at the original 1.8" metal incased OEM SSD that it replaces and as such, the Aleratec adapter mounts height centered in the laptop's 1.8" drive bay slot, similarly preserving the original thermal isolation and convection properties between the laptop chaise and replacement SSD.
iii) The PCB on the Micro SATA Cables drive sled adapter being off in vertical, relative to the dovetail rails by about 2mm, the height of the PCB not positioned mid center of the laptop's 1.8" drive bay slot (top to bottom), hence free to move about some at the mSATA connector end, making the drive sled adapter slightly more difficult to align with the internal mSATA connector located at the rear of the drive bay slot.
Since the 1.8" adapter made by Aleratec makes use of the dovetail rails in the 1.8" drive bay slot, mates well, each and every time with the laptop's internal mSATA connector.
In closing and holding true for the Aleratec adapter as well, it may be necessary for some users to attach a piece of tape to the end of the Micro SATA Cables drive sled such that it can be removed from a 1.8" drive bay slot once installed.
Minus 1.0 for not completely fitting a standard 1.8 inch, drive bay slot as advertised.
Minus 0.5 for reduced thermal isolation relative to the original OEM 1.8" SSD.
