In 2000, Joe Conason (with Gene Lyons) published “The Hunting of the President: The Ten-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton,” an examination of the Clintons’ investment in the Whitewater Development Corp. and a Congressional investigation that lasted 4.5 years, cost $39 million and found the Clintons had done nothing wrong. The book systematically destroyed every accusation against the Clintons. For this, Conason was praised by many and denounced by some as a Clinton apologist.

In the last 15 years, Conason --- a journalist whose writing on other subjects is much admired --- has had frequent contact with the media-averse Clintons and their inner circle. That access paid off in “Man of the World: The Further Endeavors of Bill Clinton.” A reader whose knowledge of the Clintons comes from the media will, therefore, be surprised by the book’s opening: the President’s end-of-term pardon of Marc Rich, a man of whom it was said that there was no crime that lacked appeal to him. The popular view is that Clinton damaged his legacy for money --- Rich’s wife had made large donations to Clinton campaigns and causes. Not so, and the explanation Conason tells is convincing, with on-the-record interviews with major politicians in Israel.

Another theme is Bill Clinton’s ferocious commitment to health care in resource-challenged countries. Even when he was health-challenged, Clinton traveled to Haiti, Africa and Thailand, where he took the measure of tragedy and helped devise programs to eliminate disease and alleviate misery. No private citizen accomplished as much --- or could have.

If one theme of the book is reporting that got buried elsewhere, another is fact-checking --- the press got a lot wrong, much of it deliberately.

The book, like Bill Clinton's post-presidency, begins with what one of the greatest hangovers of all time. After leaving office with the highest approval ratings ever recorded, the ex-president sits down for breakfast. He's stripped of power, his attendants and much of his reputation, thanks to a flurry of scandals involving pardons to donors. What follows is a man reborn by philanthropy yet unable to evade the often manufactured shadows of doubt that haunt even his greatest successes. He forged a revolutionary new approach to charity that has literally saved millions of lives, shaped by his superhuman ability to make allies, solve problems and blur lines between influence and aspiration. Conason finds both the data to document the remarkable successes the foundation Clinton created and the nuance to give you a fully realized portrait of a man who has endeavored, despite all his flaws, to change the world.

It's about time someone wrote about the good work that the Clinton Foundation is doing around the world. Joe Conason's book goes into detail about several of the successful Clinton Foundation programs while also taking a critical look at those that did not pan out. This book is well researched, thoughtful, and critical when necessary. As a former development practitioner, I understand why some folks are skeptical of foundations and non-profits as there is a long history of inefficient and insufficient action when these organizations try to tackle worldwide problems like HIV/AIDS, poverty, hunger, etc. The Clinton Foundation is a different type of development organization, and it deserves praise for bringing lifesaving medicine to millions of people living with HIV/AIDS around the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interested in learning more about Bill Clinton and the Clinton Foundation.

I found the intimate details embarrassing, but that's how close the author got to the Clintons. When they're not being attacked, there is episode after chapters where Bill and Hillary made a difference. Every objection is addressed with verifiable facts. The author concedes their flaws but concludes Hillary is a safe choice for president

I have read almost everything written about Bill and Hillary Clinton. This book by Joe Conason is by far one of the best. It is neither a pro or anti Clinton book, it just tells the story as it happened a well written and entertaining narrative. It tells of problems as well as successes. President Clinton has done a lot for the entire world since leaving office and not enough people know this. The book will be one that I will give as gifts this Christmas.

Excellent book. Focuses mostly on President Clinton's work establishing the Clinton Foundation and its extraordinary work combating AIDS/HIV in the developing world. Not a puff piece, but excellent journalism on the true workings of the Foundation.

Clinton says that some projects he takes on are planned, and some just happen. When I read that, I recognized that all service probably has that character; as pastor of a church I used to say that ministry happened in the interruptions. Rarely was the most important encounter of the day one that I had planned for when I woke that morning. As I read this account of Clinton's post-Presidential life, it seems like it has been that way for him.
Joe Conason is clearly a fan, but I find his account entirely credible. The detail about the development of the foundation is very helpful, including the institutional growing pains that produced personnel conflicts. It struck me that perhaps one of the best benefits we might extend to our ex-presidents would be access to the government fleet of executive planes. That would avoid all kinds of potential conflicts of interest and security concerns. I'm sure it would require a set of complex policies, but as we have seen a reinvention of the role it seems likely the need will continue.
Shortly I expect that Clinton will have to reinvent himself yet again as he becomes the first gentleman. It is odd somehow that the title should fall on someone who lived in the White House as POTUS. It will be fascinating to watch us all wrestle with our expectations and stereotypes. Fortunately Bill Clinton seems as well prepared for the journey as anyone could be.
