Had this on an LP long ago. Loaned it to a "friend" and never got it back. Was so grateful to find it on a CD here. Wonderful work by the musicians here. Made me smile remembering that old recording.

Loved Mass in F Minor from the moment I heard it when it first came out. Very hard to find decent religious music and I was happy with this album. I hoped it would start a trend but "Christian Rock" really went south.

absolutely one of the best "acid rock" albums done. even if only part of the album was done by the 'prunes' and last half of the album done by a canadian band. it still ranks as one of the best. an artful attempt to blend religious/secular works through rock music.

I like this. Of course I'm old enough to remember it from when it was first released. Definitely not for everyone. It IS a bit addictive. And I don't know whether the guys were Christians, or just liked to groove on the chants, but it does grab you. Listen to the clips before you buy. But for me, this is in my library of seminal albums.

This album was purchased by me in the 60's--way before Easy Rider. It's been significant religiously and musically. I was extremely pleased when amazon.com finally made it available this summer.

Hard not to Lose Interest Along the Way

This third album from The Electric Prunes is something completely different than the group's first two - and trend-setting albums. Manager Dave Hassinger, who controlled most of what the group did, believed that it could provide them greater commercial success to make a collaboration with producer / composer David Axelrod, who worked with ideas about combining Gregorian church music with psychedelia.

The Group's original members only were given minimal influence on the recordings of this project, and they contribute only in a minor degree on the album.

The first number, "Kyrie Eleison", is clearly the album's most successful and possibly the track where you most clearly may recognize the group. After this the numbers Increasingly begin to sound alike, and in spite of the rather short playing-time, it is hard not to lose interest along the way.

A pity that this otherwise exciting group should break-up after this very period-piece project.

La messe en latin et le rock !.
Grâce à David Axelrod auteur des musiques, concepteur du projet et plus ou moins le groupe tel qu'indiqué : The Electric Prunes.
Je conseille la version "Collector choice" avec les commentaires de Ritchie Unterberger.
A son sujet j'ai indiqué sur le produit tout le bien que je pensais de son livre "The 60's folk-rock revolution", je pense autant bien de la suite "from Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock".
Les informations apportées par ce grand amateur et connaisseur du rock confirment ce qui fut dit sur le disque quoiqu'en les modulant.
Le groupe entier joue bien sur la première partie et le bassiste, le drummer et les vocaux sur l'ensemble.
Si je fus déçu par mon essai de la discographie de David Axelrod avec "The song of experience" le disque ici garde tout sa magie : les guitares, assez souvent en feed-back, les additions de cuivres et les vocaux passent bien, en latin et pour ce qui est de la musicalité : pas "gauche" en français dans le texte, comme l'indique le commentateur.
Bien sûr l'oeuvre eut aussi son moment de gloire avec le passage "Kyrie eleison" dans la bande sonore d'Easy rider" mais il y a là tout ce que l'on peut attendre du rock en la circonstance : quelque chose est légitime quand au projet et le genre est bien revendiqué sans excès de violence ou de complications.
Audacieux et simple à la fois donc réussi.

Sehr ambitionierte und eigenartige Klassik-/Rock-Mischung

Diese Platte ist eine sehr eigenartige Mischung aus Klassik und Rock, genauer: Gregorianische Chöre und 1960er Garage Rock.
Die Electric Prunes wollten gegen Ende der 1960er mehr in Richtung Psychedelic Rock gehen, doch ihre Plattenfirma wollte kommerziellere Musik. Ihr Manager brachte dann den Kompromiss auf, eine Messe zu schreiben. So richtig glücklich war mit dieser Idee wohl niemand -- so konnte nur der Bassist die Noten lesen, und der Sänger konnte auch kein Latein; während der Aufnahme wurden mehrere Bandmitglieder rausgeworfen und durch "fähigere" Musiker ersetzt; die einzige Live-Aufführung war eine einzige Katastrophe. Und das hört man dem Werk auch an: Garage Rock und klassische Elemente stehen etwas beziehungslos nebeneinander. Am bekanntesten ist wohl der Song "Kyrieleison", der im Soundtrack von "Easy Rider" aufgenommen wurde.
Wohlgemerkt: Die Musik ist nicht wirklich schlecht. Und interessant ist diese Mischung allemal. Aber sie reisst einen auch nicht vom Hocker. Besser ist da schon Deep Purples "Concerto for Band and Orchestra".
Was dieser Ausgabe dennoch zu ihren 4 Sternen verhilft (neben ihrem "Einzigartigkeits-Bonus"), sind die beigefügte A- und B-Seite einer Prunes-Single, "Hey Mr. President" und "Flowing Smoothly". Diese sind prima Garage Rock, vor allem ersteres. Außerdem gibt es hier ein sehr informatives Booklet, dass die seltsame Geschichte dieser seltsamen Platte erzählt.
Geeignet ist diese Platte wohl nur für Freunde seltsamer Musikexperimente und musikalischer Kuriositäten. Alle anderen sollten erstmal reinhören.

The Electric Prunes (ein etwas zwanghaft origineller Gruppenname) erlangten einige Berühmtheit auf Grund ihres Songs im Film "Easy Rider". Die Idee, Kirchengesänge in ein Popschema zu drücken und mit elektronischen Instrumenten zu spielen, war sicher recht interessant, eine ganze CD lang wird's dann aber doch etwas eintönig. Trotzdem: Eine CD, die in einer ernsthaften Popsammlung nicht fehlen sollte.
