So, this app is not for everybody, and it has crashed once or twice. It does not replace a mixing studio or some of the better computer based programs for a pro, and if you have never done any music editing before it may seem overly complex. Even so, it's undeniably 5 stars, and I say give it a chance.
As for how complex it is, my six year old opened up the program and was having an impromptu dance party inside of one minute. It actually sounded pretty good. So despite the overwhelming appearance for the uninitiated, just jump in and you'll find that it's not so bad.
It is very, very easy to get started and the program is well laid out. Just press a couple of buttons at random and the music starts. Turn on or off the different instruments until you find a combination you like.
It's slightly more complex to move on from there, but that is only because of the wide variety of options you can tweak. The good news is, you're making music all the time, so even those without prior experience will have fun exploring if they keep an open mind. If you don't explore much, this is probably not worth the price of admission because the default loops are really only good, not great.
As someone who has messed around with sampling/looping/mixing in the past, I must say for a mobile solution I am extraordinarily impressed with the power and flexibility of this app. It's a lot more useful and easier to use than some of the outrageously expensive drum machines I bought a decade ago, and it is on par with some synthesizers for exploring sound concepts once you get it tweaked to your personal taste. I really like the easy to use interface for changing time/meter/rhythm and inserting loops in an easy to visualize array of fractional beats. It's not perfect, but it's easy enough to make a good tune; you can certainly have fun with it or even make a complete song or album if you're motivated.
as soon as I downloaded this app my SD card had an error and shut down. Then the phone kept saying it had been removed unexpectedly when it had not been removed at all. I uninstalled this app and suddenly the phone could find the SD card once again. it looks like a fun app but I can't seem to use it.
Had a tough time figuring out the UI, might be more my problem, but maybe the navigation and command structure could be a little more intuitive.
This app sounds really good, I like the choices of samples and tones. I don't usually work with electronic music, so I have not found a lot that will prove useful in my own work, but it has given me some neat ideas to expand my palette a little.
It's probably my mid-range phone, but the app is very laggy for me, there's a significant (~1 sec or so) amount of latency between tapping a button and the activation of whatever effect the button causes. And when there are more than a couple tracks going at once, things can get dicey - some samples will get out of time, or the whole project will stutter.
It's an okay app, but I'm glad I didn't pay money for it.
Some little factoids about me (to bore the living daylights out of you): Guitarist with 20+ years experience. Manipulate digital audio and make music on my DAW. ("DAW" is an acronym for "Digital Audio Workstation" for you Philistines.) So I know a thing or two about music-making and the like.
This app, for what it is, is great. Any music-making app this deep will *always* contain a learning curve. Always. One is deluding oneself otherwise. It'd be great to have a manual but, luckily enough, there's a link to a Web site to help clarify any elements in the app. It's not rocket science. One just has to take the time.
Sure, you can start tapping and triggering samples right away but did you know, kids, that you can actually *rearrange* these samples too? One just has to look deeper. So, yeah, it makes it a sequencer too. Not a too-complex sequencer but one nonetheless.
I can see musicians and the like using this as a supplement to their already-existing workflow; not as a replacement, of course. As musicians, we're always looking for ways to help us when inspiration hits. (I mean, we're all doing that...right?) This is just one more tool. I can definitely see this being used when one is away from one's DAW. Just transfer any WAVs you may happen to have on your DAW to your smartphone or tablet and away you go. DJs could use this to augment their sets. Really, use your imagination.
To any of you who rated the app low because you didn't understand what it was (for whatever reason, like getting it just because it was the free app of the day): Really?
So, to summarize:
-Great app; use it as a supplement to your music-making workflow; mostly ideal for when you are away from your DAW -May be a bit complex but nothing that can't be taken care of by taking the time to learn it
this app is mediocre at best. you only loop pre-recorded sounds that the app has (which are few) Yes you can upload your own .wav files, but seriously, if you are going to take the time to find or create them you might as well stick to editing software on a computer. I am glad I tried this for free because I was very disappointed and uninstalled this app after five minutes. I would have been upset for even paying .99 cents for this overrated app that does almost nothing!
Simple interface if you're familiar with these kinds of apps. I have only played around with it for a few minutes. So this is an early review. It does a lot more than I thought after digging in to it. It will not replace FL Studio, but it is a good, fast little drum machine. As far as I can tell, there are no multi-touch pads for programming individual notes. All the sounds and samples seem to be preset but that is fine because it makes it pick up and play. Sometimes that all you want to do especially while you are waiting in line or in a waiting room or something.
I think this app is a great way of getting creative. It's fun to use live and great at making your own sequences. The sound quality is very good too. Overall a Must Buy for anyone interested in creative musical apps!
