Anyway, even though it's marketed to babies, I use it unabashedly. I generally sleep to white noise (fan, sound machine, the *whoosh* of night air in the wilderness as it dances with a babbling brook not far from where I set my tent in the Sierras...). And this product does the job. I haven't switched it from "white noise," so I can't comment on the other tracks. "Heartbeat," may be great for a young child, but I don't need to spend my night in psychological fear of some phantom intruder (I think movies programmed us to associate "heartbeat" with imminent axe-stabbing).
The volume allows it to get quite loud too.
My only complaint would be the green-color plastic. It doesn't go with my monochromatic palette. But then again, I am a grown-man using a sound machine.
Don't worry! This isn't like one of those other updates that you find for products that warns of a failed, poorly-designed, tiny machine that electrocuted a loved one in their sleep... and then stole their wallet. Quite the opposite: this little plastic disc with its array of magical noises is still going strong after 3 years! And now I have a girlfriend* who sometimes shares my bed!
She isn't into the hypnotic vibes of white noise, so we reached a compromise to try other settings. I'll give a brief recap of my foray into new twilight auras:
-- "Ocean" is probably the most accurate and realistic. I woke up trying to shake sand out of my hair.
-- "Thunder" is a bit much.Read more ›
We also have the Sleep Sheep, and this is better because I find the sleep sheep too quiet and it also has no option to be played continuously. The other one we have is the Conair, which is cheaper for a reason doesn't sound as good and can't be plugged in. The main problem with the Conair, though, is that itdoes this horrible electronic on-the-fritz thing periodically, which wakes him up and defeats the purpose completely.
Bottom line: this noise maker helps our baby fall asleep and I think is the best on the market for the price.
After fruitless searches for a replacement with positive reviews and a reasonable price, I finally took apart this device to repair it. The volume knob problem is the result of insulating material that gets smeared across a conductive disc every time the knob is turned. If you choose to take this apart to repair it as I did, the job involves a small Phillips screwdriver, a butter knife, and a Q-Tip. FIRST, UNPLUG THE DEVICE!
There is a total of 9 screws: 4 on the outer cover, 4 that fasten the circuit board of interest, and one hidden inside the volume knob cover. Once you get the volume knob assembly out, you must pry off the top of the knob (I used a butter knife). Unscrew the hidden screw within that and the assembly will pop apart to reveal a little disc, upon which the conductive "rake" glides across. You will notice the smear lines. Use the Q-Tip to rub them off (you should see black grime on the Q-Tip). Twist the conductor to reach as much area as possible. Carefully reassemble the device and enjoy the now-working volume knob.
DISCLAIMER 1: Repair at your own risk. I have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, and while this is certainly an amateur handyman job, don't get yourself shocked or burn down your home or further ruin your device and blame me. :-) I'm not an amateur handyman. I repeat: repair at your own risk.
DISCLAIMER 2: It is my suspicion, due to the poor design of this volume knob, this repair will need to be repeated every 6-9 months. I really hope I'm wrong.
The first night we tried out thunderstorm, it is spot on and incredibly relaxing (my personal favorite), my son went from waking up every hour to two hours to waking up once. The second night he got up twice that night so I decided to try ocean waves on the third to see how he did with the other sounds. The ocean waves is also very realistic and relaxing but my son went right back to getting up every hour/two hours. On the forth night of having this I gave white noise a shot and he didn't wake up a single time, not once. We have now been using the white noise for a couple weeks and he no longer wakes up frantic, the few nights he's woken up one time he fusses for a few seconds and soothes himself almost immediately back to sleep. He wakes up seeming so rested and happy and I can relate.
I do not have a single complaint when it comes to this product. It was everything I was looking for and far exceeded my expectations. I will agree with some of the other reviews that the heartbeat does not sound natural and is not something I would want to listen too, but the rest of the sounds are excellent and realistic.
