Rodriguez argues that a wide variety of social ills, the waning power of the Catholic Church and the resistance to the Church's authority in political and spiritual matters is the result of a pervasive diabolical conspiracy against God, the Church and the social order mobilized by fanatical satanic Masons who are utterly without conscience and who have infiltrated every layer of society around the world - including some groups within the Catholic Church. He also tells us that behind these Masons are the Jews - who else, he argues, could possibly hate Jesus that much?
What I love about the book is that it provides a passionate view of historical events from the perspective of a reactionary tradition which has lost power around the world. While he would still find many allies, they are, for the most part, marginalized today. For example, he discusses the Dreyfus affair in a manner sympathetic to his accusers. In his view, Dreyfus was guilty - it was the Jews and Masons that libeled his accusers, pointed the finger at an innocent man, and had Dreyfus falsely exonerated. Taking time to research some of the events to which he refers provides a great historical education - and offers a new perspective.
Rodriguez blames the Masons for murders, wars and revolutions - for the rise and downfall of movements and leaders around the world. But, when you take away his most fantastical claims about satanic worship and a global pattern of assassination and manipulation - what he really seems to be horrified by are political changes which most people will consider beneficial: separation of church and state, legalized divorce, anti-clericalism, popular sovereignty, religious tolerance, and the teaching of evolution.
