A beautiful, weird, horrible book unlike any other

Perhaps you recall that Lisa Carver used to perform as Lisa Suckdog way back when, or you remember the zine Roller Derby from your spangled youth, or you were a follower of Lisa's sex column on Nerve, or stumbled upon her gleeful, sexed-up, revved up, wild voice somewhere else. Maybe you read her stunning memoir Drugs Are Nice, which took a grimmer view of some of her struggles with her sickly mom, her criminal father, her abusive partner, and her role as a single mom parenting a son with a birth defect. But for all its stripped-back honesty, Drugs are Nice presents only a fraction of Lisa’s life story. More recently, she self-published _________, an untitled book that collects around 80 paintings she created intuitively in late 2010 and early 2011 as part of the effort to recover memories from an early childhood so horrific it’s hard to look at squarely. Through painting and through therapy, Lisa came to recall being abused, molested, and prostituted by her father as a very young girl, and she began to understand the process of disassociating by which she had coped and functioned. In the text accompanying the images, Lisa writes about her diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder and gives interpretations of the paintings. This book is truly unlike any other. It's beautiful, weird, and horrible, and it will likely do more to help you understand DID than anything else out there.

A True 21st Century Artist ...

She can do it all - that talented Lisa Carver: draw, paint, write, perform ... to name just a few talents ....

And before you think I'm a shill for Lisa Carver, Inc. - I can readily admit I might not agree with everything she says, nor do I profess to understand all of it, but I can attest to some items of business: she raises valid points, expands taboo arguments, and does it all to the tune of her own inner sax and in her own artistic medium. Carver's book 'no title', most likely born of pain and anguish, loss and gain, exploration and revolution, is one of the better books (and by a non-bestseller list author) I've read in the last decade. I also read quite a bit - and have for many years. If a book stays with me after I finish it for longer than it takes me to donate it, then I know I've found a gem.

Lisa Carver has no formal art training, so when she picks up a paint brush to express herself in a way she has not previously been able to put into words, the results surprise her--but they should not be a surprise to any of the countless people who were in a position to help her during her childhood and instead choose not to. In _______, the book that Lisa herself says has no title and never will, Lisa Carver uses paint to illustrate the terror, helplessness, and despair of child abuse as seen through the abusee's eyes. This is a very powerful, important book that will leave you wondering if your eyes are truly open to the lives that are taking place all around you. Anyone who has been entrusted with the care of someone who is more vulnerable than themselves should own a copy.
