This cooler is amazing. I was running the Intel stock cooler until I could order this for my new PC and though the Intel cooler worked fine (59C when running Dolphin emulator and playing Mariokart full screen at high FPS) this cooler is keeping temps at about 39C during the same emulation.
Dolphin emulation: 59C to 39C
CPU-Z Stress test: 70-72C to 47C
Idle: 39-41C to 31C
Measurements taken via Speccy within an hour this morning.
Needless to say this thing rocks. I swapped the normal Noctua fan for a Noctua Industrial 120mm and have the BIOS set to very low %speeds until above 55C which never happens. After the cooler swap my PC isn't audible even though it is 3 feet away on top of my desk. I also have a 200mm fan for intake and an Industrial 140mm for exhaust.
Cooling on this unit is excellent in spite of the low fan noise. It's an excellent match for any of the 1150 sockets, probably all the way to the most powerful Intel i7's. Note that, if you really tax your system (or are an overclocker), you can purchase a second Noctua fan and attach it to the other side of the aluminum fins. But I doubt I'd myself ever need to do that.
This is an easy five star recommendation. The catch? You have to be happy with the beige and brown color, because that's all Noctua makes these fans in. But if that is not an issue, I'd consider this one of the best, if not the best, fans and coolers on the market.
idle- 42c @1170rpm w/single fan
Max load -53 c @1170rpm w/ single fan
Pros - Very quiet
Comes with thermal paste in a tube
Cons- fan color
Have you ever lived near an airport? If not, use a stock Intel CPU cooler, and you will know what it sounds like to have a jumbo jet flying through your computer room. If you aren't interested in that experience, then you might want to look at a 3rd party CPU cooler like this Noctua. I bought this not to increase my cooling, but to keep noise down and the NH-U12S has accomplished this admirably.
The NH-12S arrives in a classy looking glossy card board box. When opened, you will find AMD mounting equipment and Intel mounting equipment (both LGA 1155 and 2011) in separate smaller cardboard boxes. Yet another box contain mounting accessories like screws and thermal paste. Finally, the box of course contains the NH-12S heatsink and fan.
Installation is a breeze. Simply put the retaining bracket on to the back of your motherboard, apply new thermal paste, add the front bracket, attach the heat sink, then the fan, and finally plug the fan into the MB's CPU fan header. This whole process, which I took very slowly, consumed about 20 minutes of my time.
Once you turn your machine on, don't be surprised it you think it's still off. While the stock Intel cooler sounds like an air show is headed to your house upon startup, the Noctua is smooth and whisper quiet. Even at maximum load, you can barely hear it.
I don't have a window in my case, so it doesn't matter to me, but for those of you who like to show of your internals, just know that no Noctua fan product will ever win a beauty competition, and this product is no exception with it's stunning 1970s Soviet-inspired design. If aesthetics are your primary concern, I'd advise you to look elsewhere, but know that you are missing out on a great cooling product. Better and ugly fan than a burnt-out processor.
P.S. The corner of this fan was bent, I had to fix this issue manually. No stars removed though, it was an easy action.
Overall, I'm more than satisfied with this unit and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to keep their PC running cool.
