- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2013I absolutely love Sidney Sheldon. His books are always richly drawn, with strong characters, and intriguing plots. And this is no exception. I fell in love with this book when I was 16 (I'm now 32) and have read it over and over again. It's that good.
Tracy is a seemingly ordinary woman working an ordinary bank job and about to marry a somewhat ordinary man. But her comfortable life is turned upside down when her mother commits suicide after being financially ruined by a smooth talking New Orleans Mafia man. Tracy embarks on a half cocked plan to get revenge and ends up taking the fall in an insurance swindle and sentenced to an exorbitant amount of time in a Lousiana prison. Tracy will walk into prison an innocent woman and come out an ingenious cat burglar headed for a life she never even imagined. But first she must deal with the men who conspired to murder her mother and send her to prison...
This is a fantastically fun story. Sweeping from the grounds of the Lousiana penitentiary to the luxury of the Orient Express, it takes the reader on a world wide trip of a lifetime, as Tracy becomes the world's most wanted cat burglar. Along the way she meets several colorful characters. Imagining herself a modern day Robin Hood, she is careful to only swindle those who would swindle themselves. The reader will find herself surprised to be rooting on the bad guys, enjoying a vicarious thrill or two, and smiling at the crazy plots Tracy manages to pull off.
This book is a quick, easy beach read and one that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. It's the kind of book you can put on your bookshelf and come back to years later, eager to live and relive Tracy's exciting adventures. Sidney Sheldon is an incomparable author and this book is no exception.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2023This is an old book and I bought it for someone I have been encouraging to read for all her life. I had read this book more than 20 years ago. I read it in "One Sitting" and finished it. That tells you how deeply it entrenched itself in my mind. Not for the Literary--- but for the page turner element. Women. men. Sex. Crime. Not my cup of tea-- but it's absolutely good.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2014I haven't thought about Mr. Sheldon in decades, although I used to wait with eager anticipation in the '70's and '80's for every new book of his to come out. Wiki lists him 7th on the all-time best-selling authors list. "The Other Side of Midnight" was his second book and his masterpiece, and nothing he wrote after ever equalled it for thrills, intensity and probably the most shocking surprise ending of any book ever.
So I must have read this before but then -- lo and behold -- there it appears as an Amazon special!
Well, it was a good story, especially the early part, the frame-up and the prison days, but then it became more of a travelogue than a novel. More hotels and restaurants were mentioned than people. And paintings and museums and colors -- colors of everything were pointed out endlessly.
But still, Mr. Sheldon, thank you for so many hours of pleasure so many years ago.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2013If you've not read Sidney Sheldon, this is a great place to start ~ This is my favorite of all his work!
I love the heroine, she starts off one way, living a lovely, wonderful life ~ about to marry the man of her dreams when her whole world is quite literally shattered.
Every horrific thing that happens to her, changes her, tempers her but never breaks her.
Sidney Sheldon was the first writer I ever read where the heroine didn't wait for the hero to come and rescue her and this is my type of girl. I don't want one who lays on the railroad track screaming for help, give me the girl who's rolling her way to the sharp rocks, saws her ropes free and outsmarts the villain.
I can't recommend this book high enough!!!
Just an FYI ~ This book was written in 1985 and is dated ~ there is no way, with today's technologies, that the situations would be plausible. So, keep that in mind when you decide to purchase and/or read ~ It's still a fabulous, fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2016Beautiful but somewhat naive Tracy Whitney is set up for attempted murder and is given a 15 year sentence in an escape-proof penitentiary. Tracy soon shows her personal strengths against powerful and dangerous prisoners determined to take her over.
After a miraculous pardon Tracy is no longer naive and sets out to destroy the influential and powerful people who put her in jail. Using her beauty and native cunning, by the middle of the book she quickly achieves her objectives. Then she is faced with the rest of her life being tarnished by her prison record, until she makes contact with someone highly recommended by her best friend and mentor from her prison cell.
Tracy then starts her second career as a jewel thief, mixing with the cream of society and only stealing from those that can afford the loss. She soon confronts Jeff Stevens, an irresistible rogue and con artist, who frequently beats her in taking from the same targets. There are shades of "To Catch a Thief" in the plot.
This is classic Sidney Sheldon with fast moving page-turning action and a strong-willed heroine. Sheldon is quoted as saying "I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of it, he or she has to read just one more chapter. It's the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter."
The book is over 30 years old but the storyline and writing are not dated. Highly recommended for someone who likes books about strong willed females facing impossible odds.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2024If someone wants to read a good book, this is it.
Sydney Sheldon is an incredible writer.

Meghna SodhaReviewed in India on June 27, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Flawless read..an exceptionally brilliant work by author
This crime fiction novel belongs to an American author Sidney Sheldon whose work is constantly considered as one of the top ten best selling fiction stories of all time. It is indeed an irresistible supreme piece for readers. The ways he has portrayed the power of femininity, makes one wonder that even today's female authors are lacking to showcase it.
This is the story of Tracy Whitney a spectacular, smart, intelligent, computer genius in her mid twenties working with a bank. By the twist of fate she is being framed by a group of people to imprisonment of 15 years for the crime she has not committed. Because of her upper class etiquettes and her favoring fortune she manages to come through her punishment quite early. She comes out with the motive to avenge those people who have destroyed her life.
On the way to revenge and her need of well being, she gets involved into deadly con games and becomes unbeatable by the police and detectives.
Jeff Steven is a handsome persuasive man matching Tracy's theatrics and a super con who can only stop her.
Daniel Cooper is an insurance investigator, a detective; an evil genius who is desperate to get Tracy red handed and led her to destruction.
The book constantly keeps one on their toes. Each incidence and theft is going in rhythm and gives a sense of mindfulness. It is written in 1985 and is way ahead of its time. It is an excellent masterpiece that takes one's mind through an exhilarating journey.
"God will never throw anything at you that you can't handle. Just take it one step at a time."
