Editorial Reviews

Review

A cartoon drawn with such supreme artistry, and a text layered with such glorious wordplay, satire and historical and political allusion that no reader should ever feel like they've outgrown it...It is absurd that these wonderful books were ever out of print, and it's great to have them back―Andrew Mueller, TIME OUT

There are plenty of Latin quips and snippets of Roman history, but enough low puns to make the stories as enjoyable as ever―
EVENING STANDARD

If you're new to the indomitable Gauls, our favourite is Asterix in Britain, for its wry wit lampooning the Brits―
IRELAND ON SUNDAY

As for the English adaptations of Asterix, they represent a real triumph of the translator's art. Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge have finessed every allusion and tweaked every joke, so that their cascading English verbal wit seems to come straight from the heart of the original books―
Boyd Tonkin, THE INDEPENDENT

About the Author

ASTERIX THE GAUL, their first album, was published in 1961 and there have now been 35 Asterix albums.

I first read Asterix the Gaul when I was seven or eight years old, and loved it. From then on, I raided libraries finding every Asterix book I could lay my little fingers on, and when I reached high school, the French versions of the books were given to us as a fun way to become familiar with the language.

(I didn't like that much. I didn't want to struggle through trying to understand Asterix, I wanted to read through and laugh at it. But it was still a better idea than the rest of the stuff they threw at us.)

This edition of the book is still excellent, and still funny. It's missing a few details compared to the original, as some other reviewers have commented, but it's not the kind of thing that new young readers will notice is missing. If you're an adult looking to pick up a copy of the book you treasured as a child, then it may strike a little sore; but for new readers, this really can't come highly recommended enough.

While Goscinny and Uderzo were still figuring out their characters, this first in the Asterix series is a lot of fun. It's especially a treat for Asterix fans to see the slightly less-refined characterizations, and those who are new to the series should enjoy this introduction to the members of the little Gaulish village who are still holding out against the Roman invaders -- with the help of some magic potion. The Asterix stories are full of silliness, cartoon fighting, and puns, and "Asterix the Gaul" is no exception. Despite being the first, it holds up well and is the appropriate welcome to those who wish to visit with these lovable Gauls.

This is a really fun book. It is educational too. It teaches kids geography and they don't really know they are learning. It is funny with bright colorful pictures. It is a fast read however it is a MUST reread. Kids reread it again and again. The kids have not seen this book at all in the stores or at the school library. So it is fun to buy this and show them something that they can't buy just anywhere. I would buy this again and other books by this author and in this series. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I was talking with my husband about reading the Asterix books and watching the animated films as a kid and started reminiscing about growing up in Europe, so I was thrilled to find this on Amazon to take a trip down memory lane and introduce my husband to Asterix and Obelix. Classic entertainment.

Book was as expected. I used to read original French hardcover of "Asterix" as well as "Tintin" as a child growing up in Montreal Canada in the late 1960's. I bought this one to show my kids. Now living in the USA, I was glad to see that English versions were available. While I would not mind getting all thirty (30)+ books, not willing to pay the $300+.

Although a little slow to arrive, the book was well packaged and in new condition.

I was stationed at the American Embassy, Berlin, DDR, back in the early 1980s. I was able to go back and forth freely with my handy dandy Auswise ... which was a diplomatic ID, making the Berlin Wall magically invisible, or, at least, irrelevant. One would get their ass chewed if they flashed their passport to get across Checkpoint Charlie. Love cartoons, and even love drawing cartoons. While in Europe, I decided to try something with a little more local flair ... Asterix and Obelix. I liked it so much I didn't even care it was French. Rereading these now 30+ years later, still get a kick out of them.

Astérix is a classic comic, and even as time has moved on, it is a fun read. My daughter loves the story and is all into Romans and Gauls now. The bidding is great, and very sturdy.

    ヨーロッパでは誰でも知っているコミックみたいですね。

    敵であるローマやシーザーを「悪」として描いていて、
