Review
From easy reader and chapter book series to epic fantasies, favorite characters, settings and story lines reemerge in new additions. Young readers will welcome the return of Mo Willems's pessimistic pachyderm and spirited pig. In There Is a Bird on Your Head! Gerald the elephant despairs over a family of birds that nests atop his cranium, while Piggie is delighted. And in I Am Invited to a Party! party expert Gerald helps Piggie prepare for all possibilities, as they get dressed for a fancy party, pool party and costume party-all at the same time. PW"
It helps to have a best friend when you run into trouble, whether it's the what-to-wear-to-a-party kind or the wildlife-on-your-head variety. Like the first two entries in this beginning reader series (My Friend Is Sad and Today I Will Fly!, rev. 5/07), each of these books features a simple story told entirely through speech balloons and Willems's emotive pig and elephant characters. The animated illustrations will help new readers decode tone and meaning while the spare dialogue enhances the pictures' slapstick humor. High-spirited Piggie has never been to a party; when she receives her first invitation, neurotic Gerald takes charge of their attire. "I know parties," he claims, but Piggie and young readers may have doubts about that when Gerald insists they dress for "a fancy pool costume party." In the end, Gerald proves to be savvier than he and Piggie look. In the second book, two "love birds" make a nest on Gerald's head. Cause enough for panic, but when their three eggs hatch (in record gestation time), hysteria ensues. Luckily, Piggie has a good head on her shoulders. The minimalism of both the text and the uncluttered pictures focuses readers' attention and moves the stories forward. Party on, Elephant & Piggie! Horn Book"

My 6 year olds love the silliness and emotions in the story. They connect to the characters and also like that they can recognize or sound out some words and read parts of the story independently now that they are learning to read. Great for building confidence with beginning readers, quick bedtime stories, and lots of smiles and laughs from your littles. ❤️

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2023I love Elephant and Piggie books. Both of my kids were introduced to them in Kindergarten and they were motivated to try to read. After reading the Bob Books, and Go Dog Go, I would say that these are some of the most approachable books for early readers. This one is cute and funny for kids and grown-ups to enjoy together. Birds have begun to nest on Gerald’s head and he is not happy about it. Piggie is being her “glass is half full” self and that’s not helping… there is a super funny ending though!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2015We have the entire set. This was the first one we received as a gift and started our collection. My kids are 4yrs & 7yrs old now. We've been reading these books since my older son was 2 or 3. The stories are solely told in word bubbles as conversations between the 2 main characters, plus a few recurring characters who stop by in some of the stories. We each choose a character to 'be' and then we read the story, which is simple sentences of easy words. I honestly believe these books were a huge factor in my older son teaching himself to read at a very early age. We routinely give E&P books as gifts, and I always keep my eye out for new ones and pre-order well in advance. It's a nice little package that comes out of the blue, and both my boys are very excited when the UPS man brings us a new E&P book that they've never seen before.
Our all-time favorites are:
Watch Me Throw the Ball - I love the moral of the story where the most important thing is to have a good time, even if you're not a pro.
Can I Play Too? - love this one because it teaches you to think outside the box and make the most of what you have.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2022My 2-yr-old loves this book. I have her a book a day leading up to Christmas as sort of an advent calendar and this seems to be her favorite of the lot. As an adult, I have to say I don't "get" this book - there's no plot, no moral, it's just silliness. It's not one of those books that the adult reading will also be entertained by. But, my kid loves it and asks for it by name. She thinks it's hilarious. That's the important thing, so 5 stars from my 2-yr-old. She also loves "Don't let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" which I feel the exact same way about - I don't get it at all but she loves it. I might check out more books from this author even though they're far from my favorite.

We gave this book to our granddaughter on her 6th Birthday and she loved it! She has been learning to read in Grade 1 and this book is the right level of difficulty for her to feel successful with her reading. It is also a fun story to read.
