My 4 year old son listens to this CD everynight before going to bed. He has memorized all the songs, including the ones in Zulu. It got him interested in the world map, in Africa, and in various animals like cheetahs and lions. He took note of the boy who turned into a 5-legged cat for picking on and laughing at other people.

He listens intently and sympathetically to the story/song about children who only see their fathers once a year. My son dances with joy, just as one would imagine the children in the stories, would do so upon a happy reunion, or upon receiving a precious dress or some treats that are hard to come by. It has helped introduce my son, at an early age, to be grateful for his situation, and also to admire children around the world who can do with so little.

My kids enjoy this on long car rides. I prefer giving them something to listen to rather than a DVD because they have to use their imagination. When I was a kid we had records that went along with books, this kept me happily busy for hours! I'm glad someone is still making things to listen to instead of just a movie to plug your kids into! The best part was the silence in the car when I was driving. No one was bickering, everyone was captivated, even the teenagers:-) Excellent value for the price!

This was an all-time favorite for our children when they were little. They played it over and over every night. And now they got their copies autographed by LBM twenty years later. They still know all the words

This is a collection of wonderful stories told by an engaging storyteller with an incredibly expressive voice. And the accompaniment of the acapella harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo is just the cherry on top! I may be biased as I am South African... but every child I know gets this CD for a gift as soon as they are old enough to listen to stories.

After many months of searching I was able to purchase "Gift of the Tortoise". It is absolutely wonderful and joyful and, also one of my top gifts to give to the children in my life. I find I am singing along just as the children do giving us both a time to share a culturally different musical experience.
    Wonderful.

For anyone wishing quality for their children I've yet to find anything better. This is a magical CD. When it was stolen from the car, my son(now 18)requested I reorder it. The voice of the storyteller transports us to places and feelings we've rarely experienced and yet share a common human experience of joy and hope.If I could only purchase one CD for my child - this would be it...and I would be listening.

My son (3 years old) absolutely loves this CD. The music is beautiful and the stories have enough excitement to keep him listening all the way through, over and over again. I highly recommend this CD as a way of introducing different music to young children, after all, kid's music shouldn't begin and end with The Wiggles!

I bought this CD for my little granddaughter (one and a half years old). She loves music and rhythm. The instruments and the soothing voices of Ladysmith Black Mombazo make her smile. She especially likes to hear it as she is getting ready to take her nap. I like to hear it with her.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be better but nice for children !

wish I could fathom out how to just play the songs without having to listen to the words all the time which are a bit monotonous after the 2nd time but I suppose that's the point for children?
