Everybody knows the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. This is not it, but almost as special, as several contributors to T-Bone Burnett's masterpiece gather together at a concert after the movie's release to celebrate the success of their original work. The soundtrack had a strict adherence to a single objective: providing a backdrop for the movie characters' odyssey. From the plaintive, to the meditative, to the humorous, every song on that album is intimately tied to the happenings on the screen. This concert recording is a different affair: from the light and cheery "Sandy Land" to narrative pieces like "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto'", the listener gets a better glimpse of the breadth and versatility of the amazing series of artists that Burnett lined up for the project. In the process, it provides another excellent tribute to popular American music.

This disk does NOT contain all of the songs from the soundtrack of "Down from the Mountain," or even the best ones. What it contains are the songs that did not make the cut for the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" disk. It is a supplement to the first disk.
I listened to it before I saw the video of the concert, and was disappointed. Now that I have seen the video (which is absolutely superb), I like the disk better, but as other reviewers have noted, it does not convey the magic of the video. Given a choice between buying the disk or the video, the video is clearly the winner.
John Hartford was wonderful in the video, but it's the ladies (especially Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss) who run away with the show.
Finally, if you're interested in seeing a live performance like this, Asheville (not Nashville) is the place to see it -- the Asheville, North Carolina folk festival begins every year on the first friday in August, 'long about sundown. The performers (all amateurs) drift down out of the hills with their guitars, fiddles, dulcimers and saws, and augmented by cloggers, put on a show you'll never forget. It's the kind of show John Hartford would have loved.

This completely fuels my obsession for bluegrass. Sometimes I do not like the live versions of albums and prefer the smoother sound of the studio versions but this is a great live album. A must if you like Bluegrass.

I bought this CD mostly because it is a companion album to the movie soundtrack and has songs by many of the same singers. It is a recording of a live concert and that seems to harm the sound quality for me in some way, I'm not really sure why. The song selection is interesting, some of it better than others. I found #8 I want to sing that Rock and Roll, by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings to be a very peculiar one, not at all a country/bluegrass subject yet they managed to give it a very bluegrass flavor. Not a bad album but I prefer the soundtrack album.

I liked the easy listening fun music.

This CD definately reflects the title of it. It is music right from the mountains, just like it was sung through the ages. Stark, real, emotional. Not bluegrass, not country, not old-timey, just good old fashioned mountain music. There are negatives and positives to this project but I think the most important thing to realize is what type of music you are getting.
If you like this type of music you will like this CD, if you do not like this and are buying the album simply because you heard all the hype about the movie you probably will not like this CD. It is the roots of country music that are displayed here. Country and bluegrass at one time were not considered different and they both came from this style.
With classic performances, if you enjoy this style, you will benefit from listening to the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live aus der Grand Ole Opry
Reviewed in Germany on August 11, 2002
