I discovered Klezmer music by way of Pandora, and am totally loving it! Especially the new pop artists who have Klezmer influences. The Klezmatics are a more traditional style, but having listened to a lot of this CD on Pandora, and now owning it myself, they are my favorite of the bunch. I'd never heard any lyrics by Woody, and with this music behind them, they are so infectious, simple phrases, put together in very complex ways, take Come When I Call You. I cannot believe that this band can actually play that song! Just try singing along. However there is much to sing along with on this CD. I wish everyone could experience this kind of music, and appreciate it.
I purchased this album for the song "Gonna Get Through This World"--the version on the CD is better than any of the ones on the Internet. I was also hoping that other songs would be as good as this one, but I found most of them to be much less inspiring. "Orange Blossom Ring" is somewhat trite by current standards, but moving nonetheless. I also liked "Holy ground" and a couple of others. The Klezmatics are great musicians, so even the least interesting songs are pleasant to listen to.
Like Wilco, this group adapted unpublished lyrics by Woody Guthrie to great effect. (Amazingly, there are still hundreds of Guthrie lyrics still in the archives.) You may never have imagined loving music that relies on the klezmer tradition, but this album will change your mind. "Mermaid Avenue," which lionizes a street near Guthrie's Coney Island home, is a standout, but only one of many.
This is an amazing CD. I heard this group in person last year and their diverse style has really made an impact on my life. Thank you to this group for bringing their rich heritage to life and blending it with the inspiring words of Woody Guthrie. I look forward to your next release.
Nachdenkliche und dennoch unterhaltsame Texte mit passendere Musik zusammengestellt. Kann CD nur empfehlen, wenn man offen für interessantes persönlich "Neues" ist.
An eclectic mix, both in terms of lyrics and music, "Wonder Wheel" is incredibly engaging and uplifting; it became an instant favourite - one that I will listen to for years to come. The lyrics were penned by Woody Guthrie and range from the political and social to the deeply spiritual (in the broadest sense). The music was composed by various members of The Klezmatics - "superstars of the klezmer world". Alongside klezmer we have folk, celtic and pop influences (I'm not great on classification, but the influences seem to span the globe). The album won a GRAMMY Award in 2007 for the Best Contemporary World Music Album.
All of the tracks are 100% convincing whatever the particular flavour. My own personal favourites (it's so hard to choose favourites from album of this calibre) include: the folksy "Come When I Call You", the vibrant "Mermaid Avenue", the lullaby "Headdy Down", a deeply spirtual "Holy Ground", and the completely spellbinding "From Here On In". The album closes perfectly with Woody Guthrie's personal dream of a socially just "Heaven" set to a tune that will echo long after the music has stopped. Who knows, as it echos around your head, "if you sing songs of your dreamings, then you will reap treasures untold".
