The Leader of Amazon Inspire

When it comes to improving education, Rohit Agarwal, General Manager of Amazon K-12 Education, thinks really big.

Rohit has been working to improve education through technology for close to 10 years but today is a special day on that long journey. Today, Rohit and his team are launching Amazon Inspire - a service that will put unlimited digital education resources at the fingertips of every teacher across the country. Amazon Inspire will encourage teachers to share their best, interactive, often device-based digital content for every type of learner in every grade and every subject so they don’t always have to start from scratch. Most importantly, it will always be free for teachers.

Right before the Amazon Inspire launch, we talked to Rohit about why this project is a game-changer.

How did you first get interested in education?

I got involved in education after a memorable exchange with my niece at the dinner table. She was complaining that she received a C- on a ratio and proportions math test. I told her I’d be happy to help her but she said, “I don’t need to learn ratios and proportions. I’m done with that. If you want to help me, you can teach me probability – that’s what’s next.”

That’s when I realized the way students were learning was flawed. If my niece didn’t understand ratios and proportions, she wasn’t going to be able to learn probability.

I founded the start-up ‘TenMarks Education’ with hopes of positively impacting the education field through the power of content, distribution and devices. We were acquired by Amazon 3 years ago.

What makes Amazon Inspire so special?

Amazon Inspire will give teachers more time to do what they do best – teach. Teachers can quickly and easily find ways to engage all students. They’ll be encouraged to share their own projects and will be inspired by the great work of their peers.

In developing Amazon Inspire, we were obsessed with thinking about what is best for our customers – in this case, 3.5 million teachers. Teachers will easily be able to search Amazon Inspire for very specific requests. And, just like on Amazon.com, our content will include reviews and recommendations.

I believe benefitting and learning from your peers is natural – Amazon Inspire is the catalyst that will allow more teachers to do just that at no cost.

Why are you still so passionate about your work?

I have a 6 year old (going on 14 year old) daughter, and when someone asks her what her parents do, I am proud she can say that her mother saves lives as an Emergency Room doctor, and her father is helping people learn. This legacy is better than any paycheck I receive. It’s a dream come true to positively impact our future generation, and the future of our country.

Educators across the United States are invited to learn more about or join the Amazon Inspire beta at www.AmazonInspire.com.

In Support of the Trans-Pacific Partnership

At Amazon, we're guided by four principles: customer obsession, passion for invention, operational excellence, and long-term thinking. Our team of nearly 250,000 employees around the world have pioneered products and services for customers like Prime, Marketplace, AWS, Kindle, Fire TV, Amazon Studios and Alexa.

In addition to creating new offerings for our customers, we also work to globalize them. The Amazon Marketplace creates opportunities for sellers anywhere to reach buyers around the world and expands opportunities to sell beyond their home country. Last year, our selling tools empowered entrepreneurs in 172 countries to reach customers in 189 countries. And Amazon Web Services has brought the power of cloud computing to more than a million developer and startup customers around the world. We now offer 33 Availability Zones across 12 geographic regions worldwide, with another five regions and 11 Availability Zones to be available in the coming year.

As we expand our offerings for customers around the world, we want reasonable policies that allow for the movement of goods across borders and that enable anyone in the world to have access to a unique and vast selection. We also want policies that do not unduly limit the growth of cloud computing by erecting digital trade barriers.

That's why we support the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement and encourage Congress to approve it. The agreement makes important progress on areas such as business localization, cross-border data flows, intermediary liability and customs simplification. It's not perfect, and we encourage the administration to work with Congress to improve critical areas, including cross-border data flows and balanced copyright. But on balance we believe the agreement will help open up new markets to e-commerce, cloud computing and other internet services. And we believe that will benefit hundreds of millions of consumers, developers and business of all sizes around the world.

—Brian Huseman, VP of Public Policy

Continued Strides for Amazon Device Accessibility

I’m delighted to announce that we recently delivered an over-the-air software update to all Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices, featuring a preview edition of our VoiceView screen reader which provides access for blind and low vision customers. This update follows last year’s debut of VoiceView on our Fire tablets running FireOS 5, and last month’s introduction of VoiceView for Kindle e-readers.

We released VoiceView as a preview based on feedback from blind participants in our usability studies. Participants noted their appreciation of the simple and efficient navigation mechanism and many asked how soon they could start using it in their homes. In fact, one participant told us she hadn’t used a TV since she lost her sight 40 years ago, and after just five minutes with VoiceView, she was successfully finding and watching shows again. Another participant tried to convince us we didn’t need the device for any further studies—that we should just let her take it home with her.

As with VoiceView on Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers, VoiceView for Amazon Fire TV includes a tutorial to help customers learn how to use the screen reader. It also includes a couple of new features to VoiceView: context-specific help, and the ability to navigate to “points of interest” in the user interface for rapidly moving through rich or dense screens of information such as movie detail pages.

You can listen to a podcast with the American Council of the Blind’s MainMenu podcast. In it, we explain how VoiceView preview works, including the tutorial and design philosophy, and the way we’re enabling customers who cannot see the 2D screen to efficiently navigate the interface.

We loved hearing all of the great feedback from our testers and would now love to hear from you. Let us know how you like VoiceView for Amazon Fire TV and suggestions on how we can make it better at device-accessibility@amazon.com.

Peter Korn is an Accessibility Architect at Amazon, serving the device and content businesses.

Amazon Signs White House’s Equal Pay Pledge

At Amazon we are committed to keeping compensation fair and equitable. And today we’re proud to announce that we signed onto the White House’s Equal Pay Pledge.

This pledge is a continuation of the work we already do, like auditing our pay annually. Our review of the compensation we awarded last year at Amazon – including both base and stock – resulted in women earning 99.9 cents for every dollar that men earn in the same jobs, and minorities earning 100.1 cents for every dollar that white employees earn in the same jobs.

We are also constantly looking for more ways to engage and advance the talented women and minorities who work at Amazon and whom we seek to attract to Amazon. Our Amazon Circles and Affinity groups play an important role in building internal networks for career development, and we are experimenting with the creation of mechanisms to interrupt any unconscious bias. This is long term work and we are in the early stages in some and more advanced in others, but we are dedicated to developing solutions to drive measurable change.

“My Child Has a Fever of 101. Should I Be Concerned?”

Using Alexa – Amazon’s voice service that powers Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Amazon Tap—customers can now ask Alexa a variety of questions around fever and other common medical symptoms via the Boston Children’s Hospital “KidsMD” Alexa skill. The KidsMD Alexa skill was developed by the Innovation & Digital Health Accelerator (IDHA) team at Boston Children’s Hospital.

The KidsMD skill makes it even easier to access medical information from Boston’s Children’s Hospital, a world-class medical institution. Quick, convenient access to that information is important for all Alexa customers, and particularly parents. We’re thrilled to be working with Boston’s on such a unique and valuable skill.

Kudos

"This year, Amazon became the fastest company ever to reach $100 billion in annual sales. Also this year, Amazon Web Services is reaching $10 billion in annual sales." That's the intro to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' recent letter to shareowners, which explores how seemingly dissimilar offerings like AWS and Amazon retail can grow quickly under one roof. If you haven't read it yet, you can find it here. As Jeff says in the letter, Marketplace, Prime and AWS are examples of bold bets at Amazon that worked, and they've become our three big pillars. And as we've grown as a company and those three big pillars have also grown, we've decided it makes sense to change the titles of the leaders of those businesses—Jeff Wilke and Andy Jassy—to CEO Worldwide Consumer and CEO Amazon Web Services. This is not a reorganization but rather a recognition of the roles they’ve played for a while. Kudos to Andy and Jeff!

Announcing Amazon Catalyst

We are excited to announce Amazon Catalyst, a new initiative between Amazon and select universities that provides funding and mentorship to support bold, globally-impactful, disruptive projects proposed by members of the university community, and helps expand the local entrepreneurial ecosystem of those universities. Amazon Catalyst’s purpose is to help the university community grow early-stage ideas – those ideas that may be too early for venture capital or government funding – into successful endeavors. Whether you are a professor, undergraduate student, graduate student, postdoc, librarian, nurse, or staff member of one of our partnering universities you can apply for the program.

Welcome

Welcome to our new About Amazon section of the Website. For over a year we have been capturing stories, creating content, and building interactive features to make it easier to discover how entrepreneurs, authors, developers, small businesses and Amazonians are using the Amazon platform in transformative ways. One of my favorite features is the interactive map that shows our economic impact state by state – where we are creating jobs, making investments, helping small businesses grow and enabling authors to find readers. Our plan is to frequently update the site with news and announcements about the interesting and diverse businesses and innovations that are delighting customers around the world, so check back often!

If you have any comments about the site or there's something at Amazon you'd like to learn more about, please send us your feedback at about@amazon.com.

Thanks,

Craig Berman, Vice President of Global Communications
