About the mouthpiece. It is ~22mm cup diameter, very round rim, and deceptively deep. Very good Bass Trumpet mouthpiece. Not my choice for playing in any kind of range called alto, but on the pBone mini, it renders a very legitimate sound.
Slotting is very loose on ABS plastic. Whether this is good or bad kind of depends. I wouldn't want a French Horn to play like this, but it's not a problem on the pBone. Not like you can squeal around an octave above the treble clef with this thing. I've heard a lot of people say that plastic horns sound cold or dead. I don't really get that impression at all.
Slide is very good. Out of the box, it's very fast. A bit noisy, but whatever. Supposedly, it requires no lubrication other than some occasional water. I figure it's fine as is. Nothing else to say that hasn't been said. Buy one. It's cheap.
I will say up front that when mine was delivered there was no mouthpiece in the package. Reaching out to Amazon didn't do any good, although I doubted that they have a stock of pBone mouthpieces in any of their warehouses anyway. I even reached out to the Jiggs people, but I never heard back from them. Given that I expected to replace it with another mouthpiece anyway, it was more of an irritant than anything else.
For the record, I got a Denis Wick 10CS for it. The reciever on the pBone is too big for a small-shank mouthpiece and too small for a large-shank, so I doctored the Wick with a layer of gaffer's tape. The tape holds the mouthpiece out of the receiver well enough for it to play in tune while sealing the receiver to avoid leakage. Without the tape the horn blew ridiculously sharp (because the mouthpiece sat way too far into the receiver) and the tuning slide isn't nearly long enough to compensate. Having said that, the Wick gives it a nice voice, light enough to identify it as an alto yet warm enough to blend in with other horns.
I have discovered that this trombone is very *un*forgiving of an excess of air pressure. I noticed that if I put the air into it that I would put into my tenor or bass trombones it tends to blow sharp. Radically so in some positions. Treating it as its own instrument as opposed to a very small tenor trombone has helped me get used to the requirements of the horn, giving me much more useable recorded tracks. There seems to be a very fine line between too little air and too much. Finding that "sweet spot" gives it its own voice, which, for a piece of plastic, is actually very agreeable.
I am going to graduate to a brass alto at some point, but until then I can use this in my studio. It really does blend in well with my other horns and gives me a high part with the "authority" I was seeking for the ensemble.
I generally don’t pull out my Bach much at all, but the novelty of this along with its size and weight make it much more likely I’ll toy around with it more than my tenor. As for buying it for kids, it (or a tenor pBone) be a great introduction to the instrument.
