I've finished the game, my review hasn't changed other than it's 5 stars now instead of 4. I do wish it was longer but usually the way a good game goes. I hope there will be more Deadtime Stories in the future.
Nice graphics, good storyline, interesting mix of seek&find along with other puzzles. Definitely a cut above the rest although a bit short ( why are all the really good ones too short?).
In any case, if you like a bit of eeriness with your HOG, this one is a good bet.
First, the good. I loved the ambiance of the game. I love New Orleans, so it was fun for me to be immersed in that southern spooky feeling that N.O. is known for for a few hours.
That leads into the bad part of it. It was only a few hours long. I played straight through it an it only lasted about 5 hours, and this was with me confused for part of the game and being A.D.D. with other computer programs while playing it, so it took longer than it would have (I would estimate that it would probably run only for about 3 or so hours for focused players). Another bad thing about it, was the set up-I thought it would have been multiple stories (since it is called "Deadtime STORIES") all leading up to something with the crypt keeper(the creators should think about this storyline, it would have been a much better game)--but I guess I was hoping for too much. It was ONLY ONE story, so it felt so incomplete, as well as the story seemed just to mashed together at the end.
The game play was another thing about it, it was pretty confusing in some sections on what to do (I even had to cheat and find a walk-through of the Well scene since I was given little to no directions for it--and I hate cheating at games), not to mention you go to the same hide puzzles repeatedly, so by the time I went to the garden for the 8th time, I had it pretty much memorized. Also I am not a fan of having to go back to scenes many times, and they do this throughout the game, culminating at the end where you have to go to all of the 5 scenes (1st house, 2nd house, swamp, victim's residence area, and the graveyard) and find more stuff, which is annoying.Read more ›
I liked this game very much. The graphics are outstanding and the scenery is eerie as befitting the storyline. Much of the gameplay involves collecting ingredients for potions which I enjoyed concocting.
The puzzles in this game are topnotch. There are a few anagram type games, one involving a wheel of skeleton heads that reveal a secret message when you click them in the right order. There's a logic game where you put medicine bottles in the correct order on some pharmacy shelves. In one game you use a potion to "paint" spirits and set them free.
As another reviewer mentions, the game creators considerately point you towards the scenes you need to interact with next as the game goes on. You are provided a carriage which lists the relevant locations and then takes you there.
I definitely am looking forward to the next installment of this game.
