Barbara Demick has developed a specialty in assembling and writing affecting and nuanced personal histories of people you would not otherwise hear about caught up in the kind of struggles that tend to get presented as black-and-white. This book deals with the experience of ethnic Tibetans in one region of western Sichuan Province. It is as readable and compelling as a novel, while remaining rigorously faithful both to documented history and to the individuality of each of Demick's informants. Demick's graceful execution makes a difficult balancing act look easy.
