Oh, what a disappointment! I wanted an engrossing and escapist summer read, but this isn't it. This is the story of Emmy, circa 2009, and Maggie, circa 1942-43 (as told mostly through her much younger sister, Lulu, who is still alive in 2009). The chapters switch back and forth between the two women, both residents of Folly Beach, South Carolina and both suffering romantic heartaches. While it is a time-honored literary technique to tell parallel stories, it is difficult to do, and unfortunately it doesn't work here. The shifts are bumpy and jolting--not a smooth transition. The writing is, at times, saccharine, and the characters are so one-dimensional that it's easy to predict the plot. Unless you are a huge Karen White fan, I say skip this one.
