This doesn't hold a candle to the original mStand. The original is very robust and you know that your laptop is secure. This round base leaves a smaller foot print and it's easy to rock off of the circular base and touch the edges of the stand (think of a tricycle tipping). When I flipped the stand upside down and spin the disc, it is loose. The set screw was seated as far as it will go from the factory so there is no room to tighten the base; it's machined with too much slop. Aluminum is milled, it's not stamped like steel so there is no reason that it's not a tighter tolerance. When spinning the base, you can feel a rough spot (grind) every 1/8th of a rotation (for those of you that might say the noise is only because it's upside down, I discovered the noise while it was sitting right-side up). When the stand is rotated, the laptop swivels much too easily and there is no means to tighten the base to increase a slight friction. The stand feels much more flexible than the older mStand as well. Overall, less premium that previous models.

Cosmetically, the ring in the back of the stand is loose and keeps popping out. I can tell that it's just not nearly the same quality as those I've had before. I can see that the opening in the back was formed poorly or the plastic was molded incorrectly (it looks like both) as there are wavy gaps at the seam of the plastic and the metal stand. There's also a deformation in the milling where the circular opening is too. It's only cosmetic, but I've never ever had that ring pop out on the other stands and this one has separated 3 times in the first 10 minutes of handling it.

To Rain Design, Either you have changed fabricators to cut costs or your fabricator has cut corners to increase its profits. Your product is showing signs of slack in production quality. The stand is no longer premium and if I had this knowledge before I purchased, I'd have found an older mStand instead. I no longer have my original stand and I believe the opening as a soft molded rubber rather than plastic trim, but I cannot examine to validate. Having a comparison in quality that spans over 3 years of mStand products, I can see the difference and I'm disappointed. Images and video included so that all can see I'm not exaggerating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the standard mStand that doesn't swivel.
