I'm a huge fan of historical non-fiction that breathes life into old stories. This book is a fresh take on a time period that has been thoroughly studied. The tone is sober at times and laugh-out-loud humorous at others. There's an interesting cast of side characters that add to the richness of the story. I think this book is being released at a critical time in our history. Looking back at a time when we were deeply divided might give us some insights into how to at least attempt to move forward and reach for the goal of becoming a more perfect union.
