The story starts out with a hunt for the body of a guide mauled by a grizzly bear. Joe Picket is now part of a Predator Attack Team to handle bear incidents. He’s fifty and feeling too old for this. But this tense ride on horseback into the wilderness is just the beginning of Joe’s trials and tribulations.
Someone shoots at the cantankerous Judge Hewitt and hits his much loved wife instead. The new sheriff is so arrogant and incompetent that Joe has to investigate behind his back. The deputies hate the sheriff and become Joe’s allies.
Meanwhile Joe’s falconer friend Nate Romanowski has also being targeted by a sniper. There are a lot of long-range rifles floating around this story, and the reader learns all about the latest technology that lets anyone become an effective sniper. Be prepared for lots of action. You won’t soon forget “Pickett’s charge” — or Nate’s rough justice for the sheriff. Joe’s wife Marybeth continues to be a behind-the-scenes investigator with her amazing ability to find things out through internet research and community networking.
I don’t want to hurry C. J. Box — but I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
