My son turned six in January. I took him out of kindergarten in October of 2010 to address several health issues. I am not a teacher. I found the responsibility of teaching him how to read daunting. Several attempts failed. Enter the Bob Books. Simple, funny, effective. He loved them. We have now completed SEVEN SETS--sets 1 thru 5 plus both Sight Word sets--just in time for the end of what would be the end of his kindergarten year. The only reason for not giving the full complement of stars is this: I think some of the words are too close together, especially in the more advanced sets. Also in the advanced sets, there are too many words per page. When you start doing leveled readers you will see that there is more space between the words and fewer words per page. This is important, because the child can have difficulty distinguishing between the words and can become overwhelmed when they see a lot of sentences on the page. However, overall our experience was very positive. I feel I have prepared my son for 1rst grade. You can handle the above-mentioned problems by using a blank index card to cover parts of sentences or whole sentences. Also, I strongly recommend creating flash cards with blank index cards of every new word that occurs, starting from Set 1. First drill the words until the child knows them, then do the book. Do not do the book without drilling the words. It would be nice if the books came with Flash Cards but they do not, so you will need to make your own. All in all highly recommend. Feel confident in making this purchase.
