Thanks to Amazon for bringing this book out in English. "
The Air Raid Killer " was nearly a non-stop reading experience for me: the plot was totally exciting and immersive. Yes, it is another serial killer book, but it is the scene of the horrid crimes that makes the difference. That and the character of the hero Max Heller, Detective of the Dresden Criminal police. That is Dresden, Germany, of May, 1945. The Russians are nearing the city. The civilian population lives in fear of "Ivan". They are hungry, weak and dirty in a city as yet untouched by bombing. They are almost as fearful of a monster who is stalking women and mutilating them. It is Heller's job to find him in a city teeming with refugees and stop him. I do not want to say much more because it would be unwise to drop spoilers. Just know that the landscape the author paints for Heller to work and live in is one that brings to dramatic life a telling of what was to befall Dresden, and other Reich cities.
Aside from that, and that is very much enough , the crime story is close to the acceptedly expected crime thriller. It is the sense of time and place and utter depravity that will hold your eyes to the page. Do not miss this one.
