Barbara Demick, one of the most scholarly and meticulous journalists around, has written a gripping, personal story following a number of Tibetans through three generations. Eye opening and deeply moving, this book and the stories contained in it shed light on an area and Chinese ethnicity for whom the narrative has been tightly controlled by China. The author writes briskly, the sentences pop. Demick is a master at personal history in overwhelmingly stressful conditions created by overbearing totalitarian governments. A must read.
