Wow! There is a lot going on in this book. Emmy has lost her husband in Afghanistan and is grieving deeply. She helps her mother, Paige, in her book store. Her mother grew up on Folly Beach in SC and learns the bookstore there is for sale after she purchased some old books from Abigail, the current owner. Emmy discovers some mysterious notes written in he margins of some of the books and grows curious as to their origin and purpose. She encourages Emmy to purchase it and she does. After the move Emmy learns the bookstore comes with Lulu who makes bottle trees out back and sells them through the bookstore. Lulu has lived her whole life on Folly but is not open to discussing the past or the noes in the old books with Emmy. Emmy discovers notes in more books and realizes they are lovers communications from the time of World War Two. Will she be able to uncover the mystery of who wrote the notes and why? Will Lulu warm up to her and help her in this endeavor? The book is written with some chapters in the present and the next in the 1940's. I found this confusing at times but a very nice way to tell this story. There are times of tear jerking sadness and times I laughed out loud while reading this book. There are many twists and turns that keeps the reading guessing about the notes and what the outcome will be.
