When you're browsing on Amazon, you may have noticed sidebars such as "if you like this author, you may also like". That's the premise behind this book, which is a collection of short stories written in collaboration. Perhaps you're a fan of John Sandford, as I am. So I may like Jeffery Deaver. Lo and behold, there's a short story written by both, featuring each author's famed protagonist. It's a nice concept, but not as successful as one might wish. The short story format isn't sufficient to offer any depth to the characters, so what emerges is essentially a peek at basic personality traits and writing styles. Since all the authors are known for novels, short stories sell the reader short. You really can't get a good feel for whether you'd enjoy any of the other writers. I think this might have worked better with fewer pairs of authors and novellas instead of short stories.
