Now this book completely redeems the first. The main character is given some room to unfold, he doesn't really have those corny romances anymore but instead has insane and feverish visions of every woman he meets! His adventures aren't nearly so boring- in fact they've become astronomically more terrifying, and the peoples and creatures of this bizarre world become more colorful and bizarre. Like I said in the first review, things get so abstract its disturbing. Well prepare to have a murderous naked, and ancient tyrant masturbate while he offers you food! Most importantly, the ending has a bang. ;D
Many of the feelings i get from Gene Wolfe i also got from China Meiville, in how the authors illustrate a very fantastical world and do so with descriptions that themselves create a sort of pattern, and a certain geometry in the thought they provoke. It is in this i find a very sincere and intelligent form of literature.
This is a darker sort of sci-fi fantasy, and those that read it will know what i mean. Very good book.
