Many series stay almost as good as the first book, but not better, and that is why, if I don’t like the first book, I don’t bother reading the rest of the series. Shannon Mayer is one of the FEW authors who start out books at a full run, and who ALWAYS delivers on her promises of saucy, smart, and capable heroines who hold their own, sometimes not so gracefully, but what would be the fun in a lead character who is perfect from the very beginning? Who listened to everything told to her? As a 53 year old woman, I am IN LOVE with the PWF group of authors/books. These heroines are even more relatable - they have many of the issues we “grown ass women” have (a quote from this book), and STILL get the job done, often BECAUSE they are “grown ass women” and know the world isn’t the one you see through rose-colored glasses, and neither are the men.

This book, in which Breena, the main character, gets into a whole lot of trouble, whether she asks for it or not, feels soooooo true to how “one of us” would handle situations, making her more relatable to the women who mostly sit around and read these books. She still has a crush on the hot guy, but thinks that he is too hot for her, so she is suspicious, like she should be. None of her usual friends/cohorts are acting normally, so she has to depend, somewhat, on a new cast of characters who make her realize that she doesn’t need that job, that she thought she needed, nearly as much, and that she can form her own “merry band” of supernaturals who will be much more honest and faithful. I won’t talk about the facts of the book, but this second book is even better than the first one, and THAT would have been very difficult. RUN TO READ ALL OF MAYER’s books, if you like fun and laughter along with your paranormal action!
