The world of Dune is massively built and mercilessly thrown at the reader. Everything is so alien, which is wonderful once it stops being off-putting. Moment to moment can be pretty dry, and you have to care about the big picture to stay engaged. I wasn't ready to read it as a young adult and still not quite ready as a young middle-aged reader. I'm glad I kept trying, and I'm excited to start on the next book in the series.
