I am VLSI design engineer with 20 years experience. During these years I have been working on many specific blocks design of Ethernet NIC. The new project I am exposed to now involves some more degree of higher level architecture understanding and more of that it is baseband controller, i.e. SOC - the system that integrates microprocessors on which a operating system may be run. I felt my current knowledge was not enough and bought the book. The choice appeared to be perfect. It explains the principles of processor design starting from the very basics. The book is entertaining (but not overexposed with entertaining to buy the applause of the reader by any mean). The authors are supposedly very good teachers. For me the best teacher characteristics is to be able to anticipate the points of difficulties which arise among their students and this is what they do - answer the questions that just arrive in my mind. The presentation of the 3 basic types of processors is awesome. They do it in animation manner adding each needed piece of hardware each time there is a need in it with thorough explanations. I would recommend very much for the Electrical Science students and for seasoned professionals who weren't exposed to SOC or embedded architectures during their career but for some reason want to close the gap.
