I loved every page of this book. The story is scrumptiously beautiful and haunting, sad and hopeful, filled with loss and new beginnings. It is as much about people as animals, and often the two seem almost the same. The language is a delight; my favorite sentence was this (describing a human): “Her hair is thick and brown, the color of a rotten branch teeming with luscious ants.” On half the pages I was teary, on the other half laughing aloud. After I finished the book, I became aware that I was walking around smiling for a long time, and I kept thinking I looked like a Cheshire Cat, but I couldn’t stop. If you’re an animal lover, read this book. If you’re looking for signs of hope in the world, read this book.
