Customer Review

I never like to provide such a negative review, but in the case of this phono preamp I don’t believe I have a choice.

I had read that an exterior phono preamp will normally improve the sound quality of a HIFI stereo system. Under normal circumstances this is true since the built in preamps included with entry level turntables and amplifier/receiver’s are usually of minimal quality.

So, I acquired this phono preamp from my grandson. I had purchased it for him a few years ago, but it turned out it was not needed. He told me he would rather use the preamp included with his receiver. I decided to give it a go with my system.

Setup was easy and in no time I had vinyl spinning on my Audio Technica 120xusb turntable. I am running a Sony Strdh190 receiver.

Almost as soon as I turned a critical ear toward the music, I noticed an obvious lack of improvement. In fact, I felt there might be a loss of sound quality. I ran the preamp with a lower quality turntable, a Sony entry level turntable. Again no improvement and I felt I could discern a loss of dynamic sound quality. It seemed to me this preamp deaden the high end frequency.

I suppose this will help if one does not have a built in preamp, but that is the only case. However I would caution any possible purchaser to note: following my above tests, I did an online search for other reviews if this product. Who knows, maybe I got a bad one.

Not only were most reviews similar to mine, but several warned of possible electrical problems concerning this product.

My final advice: stay away from this preamp.
