I really enjoyed Charlie Jane Anders' last book "All the Birds in the Sky" and when I read about the setting for this book I immediately preordered it. While I finished this book, it was really a slog, and I felt like I had to force myself to get through it. The setting and the various cities on the planet are interesting, but I found the characters to be tedious and feel like their growth was too slow given their experiences and I often just got irritated with them for making the same mistakes over and over again. I kept waiting for the book to pick up and have a point, but you have to get through 80% of the book before it starts heading in a direction that everything has been building towards, but even then you only get partial payoff as it kind of fizzles in the end.
Overall it feels like a lot of exposition of "this happened", "then this happened", "while these characters were wearing this and worrying about that", without ever going anywhere or saying anything too deep.
I will still eagerly await what Charlie Jane Anders does next in her career, and I think she can grow into a great author, but I will probably be a bit more hesitant and wait for reviews before I purchase her next book.
