I've used previous versions of this book to successfully prepare for certification in Java SE 5, 6, and 7. This is an excellent upgrade to the Java 7 version.
Java 8 brought big changes to what is allowed in an interface, lambdas, and streams. The chapters covering these new features are very well-written, and to the point. The chapters on JDBC and concurrency features, like the fork-join framework, felt a bit rough (to me at least) in the previous version, have been honed and now fit well. More basic material, like access modifiers and inner classes, is excellent as always.
Like previous versions of the book, the authors are clear that the goal is passing the exam, not theory. The end of chapter exam prep questions are not easy ("to toughen you up" as the text says). The attached CD contains an electronic version of the text, and a exam simulator. Do yourself a favor and work through it. Some of us don't like being wrong. As a result, the transition from reading to practice exams is painful but completely necessary. It is where the understanding I develop reading gets transformed to the mastery of detail required to pass the exam. The questions here are a great source of driving that necessary process.
This remains the go-to source for preparation for the exam. Highly recommended.
