I tutored two little girls in first grade. At the beginning of the year they were very behind. They were progressing but after I introduced these, it seemed to click. They would come to the session with enthusiasm. After our lesson, they would begged to read 2 books instead of 1 which we only had time for. I decided with teacher's permission to extend the sessions to accommodate them. At the end of the year I got a large index card and wrote "Nyla can read." I then in different colored markers wrote down all the titles they had read.
