Imagine walking half a day's walk just to get drinking water for you and your family barefoot, every day as your primary job. Imagine sitting in class while your teacher is delivering a lesson and then your school gets bombed. What happens next? Check out the book.
The narrative is told through two different protagonists and their stories are based on true stories of what life was like in the Sudan when the civil war started in the 80s and now. The book is short, but packed with a powerful story of what the Lost Boys of Sudan went through. The story is truly inspiring and I couldn't recommend it more highly.
I read this book with my ELD IV class, students that are in the country up to about 4 years, and it was just the right level for them to read on their own. The story also kept them engaged the throughout the book.
The book really inspired students and gave them a sense of how lucky we are to live in a first world problem.
