Abraham Lincoln, then a dark horse possibility for the presidential nomination, along with his old colleague and mentor, Stephen T. Logan, defended Peachy Quinn Harrison in a capital murder trial. Then as now, winners win, and losing the case would've probably tanked his chance at the Republican nomination.

It's riveting reading and offers enormous insights into the way Lincoln's mind worked, how he approached problems, his gift for distilling the most complicated matters down to their essence. Can't recommend it enough.
