This novel completely blew me away! I read it over the (hot Texas) weekend this past weekend, putting it down only to do essential chores. The plot builds to a climax that is surprising, imaginative and brilliant! Without giving too much away, the character development of Noemi, our heroine, and Francis, her cohort, is excellent. Noemi grows into a mature young woman after years of vapid party-going and a carefree life. She is extremely intelligent and brave and undergoes unspeakable horrors at her cousin's husband's family home, High Place. I learned about botany: mushrooms and fungi, and even cicadas, while also learning about Mexico. This is the perfect gothic novel: a woman in distress, a house full of secrets along with their inhabitants, and even a misty cemetery filled with ghosts. I adored GODS OF JADE AND SHADOW, so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. I want to read more from Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
