I'm a little embarrassed to say that finding earplugs I like has been a lifelong search and an exercise in futility (okay, not life-long, but for the past 9 years since I started wearing them to sleep). Stores such as Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Target, and most grocery stores only carry a few brands; usually the "Sleep Pretty in Pink" women's earplugs (because pink=female, natch; and it's important to be pretty, even when unconscious!), Hearoes (with varying noise reduction ratings), and the moldable wax swimming earplugs. Even the earplugs with the highest noise reduction ratings were sub-par, and many of them fell out of my ear by morning. We also sleep with a fan, and with any of those earplugs I could hear the fan clear as day.
After years of this, I finally thought to look on Amazon and found these. I'm not sure why they're colored like they're carrying a glow stick on their way to a rave, but I don't care. Men, don't let the cotton candy colors dissuade you from buying these. The feature I love most (and I don't know why all earplugs aren't made this way) is the "handle" on the end - easy to grab when taking them out, and adds an extra seal against your ear after they are inserted. They also make it helpful to know when to stop pushing them in. They aren't as dense as some of the other earplugs I've tried, but somehow they shut out more noise.
I don't think they are meant to last for more than a few uses. But considering you get a thousand of them in one box (okay, 200 pairs), this isn't a big deal. Use them once, toss 'em. Each pair comes packaged in individual plastic bags. I've gotten the best sleep I've had in years. And even though they shut out all the noise that bothers me, I'm still able to hear my kids when they come in to wake me up at the crack of dawn (perhaps it's the clear, piercing toddler voices). Thank you, rave earplugs. Now I need to go re-evaluate my life after leaving the longest Amazon review I've ever written...for earplugs.
