The beginning pages let readers know that this book is an almost true story, and in the life of a rat, that is a true statement: they take food, get caught, and escape from certain demise only to repeat the cycle. That is what makes this book cute to me other than the fabulous illustrations and fun rhymes. However, the whole concept of sharing or not sharing is arbitrarily glazed over. The rat was caught because he became greedy and his home was found, not because he was not being generous with his friends. I expected there to be a stink from the hoarded potatoes which would lead to his discovery, but nope... However, he shares now just because he lives in a sewer. I need to know why that changed things for him, and the answer isn’t mentioned.
