I genuinely don’t understand why this book is getting good reviews. I tacked this book on to an order last minute when it was on sale just before Christmas. I thought due to all the rave reviews it would be perfect for my silly four-year-old son who loves books and tacos. Shame on me for not opening and reading the book before giving it to him as a gift. This book is just terrible. The plot is weak, poorly written, and just outright sporadic. But the worst part for us is that my son LOVES salsa. It’s one of his favorite foods and while he’s in his current “picky food stage” it’s one of the few ways we can get him to unknowingly eat lots of veggies. While reading the book I had to keep saying things like “oh, I don’t understand why the dragons don’t like salsa so much, we love salsa, right?” in an attempt to thwart any repercussions this book may have. I certainly didn’t think the dislike of a food in this book would be so prominent given the title being Dragons LOVE Tacos. We are consciously trying to help our kids be adventurous eaters, but kids are naturally hesitant trying new foods, so why would anyone write a kids book that repeatedly states how much the characters HATE spicy foods and salsa?! I’ve never read a book I’ve disliked so much in my life, and it is no longer a book we’re keeping in this house. I’m actually sad that I supported its popularity by purchasing one.
